winter

Before you dive into this guide, I thought I would provide a little inspiration to get your curiosity flowing. Here are this year’s top ten experiences to consider looking into while visiting Fernie! Gallery Tour Fernie is rich in arts and culture. The Fernie Museum and Arts Station are major hubs...

Fernie is a mountain playground with no shortage of activities to get us through winter. With an abundance of options comes competition with other amazing sports. My kids enjoy alpine skiing and snowboarding, but we also try to make time to Nordic ski as a family. While we never struggle to get the...

Those who play hard typically put as much time and effort into their health and well-being to ensure they can continue to play hard. Offsetting the fatigue and stress put onto the body through rest, relaxation and rehabilitation. Yoga, Pilates, acupuncture, massage, physiotherapy… these are all in abundance in Fernie to support an active community and the many who travel here to experience the mountain lifestyle.

With kids back in school or full-time daycare, respiratory illness season is here and it’s a perfect time to change things up a bit and set yourself up for a healthy and active winter season. The goal is not necessarily to avoid illness altogether, but to have a milder course, to decrease complications and hospitalizations, and prevent transmission to those who are more susceptible, like the immune-compromised, young children and babies, and people over the age of 70.

The South Rockies field team is one of Avalanche Canada’s six field teams. Our team of three avalanche professionals is passionate about empowering safe backcountry adventures and working together to collect critical information about the snowpack in the backcountry surrounding Crowsnest Pass, Elkford, Sparwood, Fernie, and Elko.

Most animals have three choices to survive winter: migrate, hibernate, or cope with freezing temperatures. Many birds (and some humans) choose to migrate south to warmer places. Bears fatten up and sleep through winter in their dens. But aquatic animals have an extra challenge: freezing water. Few animals can withstand being frozen because the forming ice destroys cell membranes, so aquatic animals have “cool” adaptations.

Fernie Alpine Resort is a winter wonderland for ski and snowboard enthusiasts. With its abundant powder and incredible terrain, it's no wonder that thousands of visitors flock to this resort every season. Among the many people who make the Fernie experience unforgettable are the dedicated team of...

Illustrated by Sarah Pullen Did you know... A lot of insects hibernate? This is how many have survived for millions of years. It is how some are able to grow, and for others it is a survival skill. Flies are capable of surviving the winter cold. The cold air drives them into shelter which is why...

The Elk Valley Snow and Avalanche Workshop Society is proud to be hosting our annual event again this year. The full-day workshop returns October 28, 2023, with a theme that speaks to the diversity of the winter backcountry landscape: Carving a Path Together: Strengthening Avalanche Safety Across the Community.

Anyone visiting Fernie during the winter will be drawn to the amazing backcountry, whether on skis/snowboards, snowshoes or a snowmobile. While the experience can be one of the highlights of your visit, once you set foot outside controlled areas (essentially Fernie Alpine Resort), you expose yourself to substantial avalanche risk. Fernie’s legendary deep powder and steep mountains can be fatal if not approached with respect.
