Say ‘Yes’ to Fernie Challenges

ELK VALLEY ULTRA BORN TO ADVENTURE/STAG LEAP PHOTO

In a community with over 400km of trails, you know there are going to be year-round challenges to enjoy. Whether it’s an organized race or a bucket-list item, there is no shortage of type-two fun opportunities for you to enjoy while in Fernie. Here are some of our favourites.

TRAIL TO ALE
Fernie Brewing Company should definitely be on your ‘to do’ list… but do you know what makes it even more worth it? Completing their Trail to Ale challenge. FBC Trail to Ale was created by the wonderful Abi Moore, who was a creative genius as well as a very successful ultra runner! Lost too soon, she left behind a legacy that will never be forgotten. Trail to Ale being one of the many! So, while you’re complaining about biking Hyper Vent, P9 and Swine Flu, imagine running it! Yup, that would feel far worse. Just remember you get a free pint and a sticker to brag about this very worthy accomplishment. ferniebrewing.com

FERNIE GRAVEL GRIND
Listen, gravel bikes are cool. They take you to amazing places you wouldn’t have seen otherwise. They can be social and chill, or the hardest bike ride of your life – that’s the beauty, you get to choose. The first gravel race I ever did was an all-women’s ride. There were gals in dress up, riding in groups, enjoying the amazing scenery. And there were those charging at the front, pushing the limits. That’s what I love about it – it’s for everyone! The Anything Goes Event Series crew know what they’re doing. Distances for all levels. The best aid stations I’ve ever seen. And the most scenic gravel around Fernie possible. Just do it. anythinggoeseventseries.com

TRANSROCKIES SINGLETRACK3
The Transrockies put Fernie on the map as a mountain bike destination. Fernie has been the start or the finish of every single one of their Classic 7-day race series since its inception, and now they're back with a new format – the three-day Singletrack 3! Expect epic trails, making friends on course, fantastic food and refreshments, and memories for a lifetime. ferniesingletrack3.com

ELK VALLEY ULTRA / HEADWALL HUSTLE
This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Stag Leap Running and their epic events. Originally started by power running couple, Abi and Mike Moore, the torch has passed onto new organizers Jessica and Lauren who are ensuring the trail running community gets to enjoy the epic courses the Moores created a decade ago. This summer, you have two challenges to choose from – the most challenging and beautiful 50km trail run you’ll ever complete, or the shorter yet still jaw dropping Headwall Hustle. Pick one – or both. You won’t be disappointed. stagleaprunning.com

FERNIE TEARS & GEARS MOUNTAIN DUATHLON
Once again, an Abi inspired event. She loved to run, I loved to bike and we couldn’t find an event we could do together. So, we created one, obviously. Now a fundraiser for the Abi Moore Memorial Scholarship, this event is known for pushing your limits while enjoying a community-focused environment and having FUN! Every year, it’s a highlight for me… to see all of these people come together, cheer one another on, and have fun. I hope to see you there. raceroster.com/events/2026/114510/tears-and-gears-2026

STEEP N’ DEEP XC
After their Cranbrook Gravel Grind, the Anything Goes Event Series hosts their hottest event of the year, the Steep n’ Deep XC. Showcasing trails in Mount Fernie Provincial Park this event features four timed stages highlighting some of the best trails Fernie has to offer including steep climbs, technical terrain, and a whole lot of fun. In true AGES fashion, it’s a weekend-long event with socials, beer gardens and more. anythinggoeseventseries.com/steep-n-deep-xc

Again, this is just a sample of what’s out there. Fernie is packed with activity, including weekly run clubs with Stag Leap, women’s rides with the Fernie Trails Alliance, tennis in the park with Fernie Tennis Co., and so much more. Stay up to date at ferniefix.com.
