The Impacts of Community and Social Events on Health and Wellness

Summers in Fernie are alive with activities, events, and opportunities to connect with friends and neighbours at concerts, farmers' markets, festivals, and patio gatherings. These events offer more than just gathering, they have the potential to have a real and lasting impact on health and wellbeing. There is a real sense of belonging and connection that you have probably felt after spending time in community and there is a reason for that.

One of the most obvious upsides to community events is that they enhance our social connections with one another. We come together to race bikes, listen to music, and share time together and that helps build lasting relationships while reducing isolation which is a major driver in mental health problems when it becomes prevalent in someone’s life. Humans are designed for connection and we coregulate with one another. What we feel is amplified when we are in a group. Joy is felt more deeply, laughter comes more easily, and the stress of everyday life seems to melt away. And this isn’t anecdotal; studies have shown that social interaction is crucial for maintaining cognitive function and emotional balance. If you have ever had a tough day or week and still made the effort to attend something like the Wednesday social with a group of friends, you have probably felt this yourself.

Races and community outdoor events abound during the summer! We are coming off of back-to-back cycling race weekends with Single Track 3 and Fernie Gravel Grind, this month will host the Elk Valley Ultra, in August there is the BC Rugby Saratoga Cup and Tears and Gears, and September and October will see Steep N Deep, Femmduro, and the Fernie Half Marathon, 5k and 10k races. Not to mention the grassroots hiking, biking, paddling, and fishing groups that gather organically. Physical activity is a cornerstone to health and taking advantage of the warm summer months to plan and train for an event lowers the barrier to entry and confers a major advantage to building a movement practice you enjoy that can be taken into the fall and winter months. And many of these events benefit local non-profits and causes which means they serve a dual purpose. You improve and achieve important physical goals while contributing meaningfully to the community you live in! While a race or event may seem intimidating, many of them offer shorter and easier options and all of them are welcoming to beginners. Learning a new sport and stepping outside of your comfort zone can teach you a lot about yourself and your capabilities which is important for all ages.

Even strolling around the summer farmers' market in Rotary Park provides an opportunity for movement and connection while also gaining you access to fresh seasonal produce that supports the local agriculture community while promoting better dietary choices. The food we eat is tied to the land on which it grows which has a deep and rich cultural history as well. Taking a moment to appreciate where you live and learn about all of the culture and tradition of this place fosters a deeper connection to this place and the people who contribute to it.

As quickly as summer comes, it is gone just as fast so lean into all it has to offer for your health and wellness. By participating in events, socials, and connecting with others – you also give back to the social connection and benefits that community members receive. These are powerful tools for enhancing your individual and community wellbeing. If volunteering is more your jam than racing and participating actively, there is plenty of opportunity for that as well! Reach out to groups like the Fernie Trails Alliance and event organizers to learn about giving opportunities. You won’t regret the time you spend in this community, and it will become something you look forward to every year, especially in those dark winter months when we all pine for the warm sun and ease that comes with summertime!
