Fernie Rod and Gun Club Banquet
This month the publisher's request was for something cultural. Perfect. How about one of the longest running social and cultural events in the Elk Valley? Where else will you and seven hundred (or more) of your closest friends get dressed up to celebrate one of the oldest organizations in the province? That’s right, the Fernie Rod and Gun Club Annual banquet.
The Fernie Rod and Gun Club annual banquet is a much-anticipated community tradition that brings together outdoor enthusiasts, families, local businesses, volunteers, and supporters from across Fernie and the Elk Valley. More than just a dinner, the banquet is an evening dedicated to celebrating the region’s strong hunting, fishing, archery, shooting sports, conservation, and outdoor recreation heritage.
The event typically features a full meal, prize draws, raffles, silent or live auctions, games, and opportunities to recognize the people and organizations who contribute to the club throughout the year. It is also one of the club’s key fundraising events, helping support important programs and initiatives such as wildlife and fish habitat projects, youth education, outdoor skills development, range maintenance, conservation advocacy, and community partnerships.
A major part of the banquet’s appeal is its strong sense of community. Guests have the chance to reconnect with friends, meet fellow hunters and anglers, share stories from the field, and support local conservation efforts in a fun and welcoming setting. Local businesses often play an important role by donating prizes, sponsoring tables, or contributing items for auctions and raffles, making the banquet a true community-supported event.
The evening also helps highlight the Fernie Rod and Gun Club’s broader mission: encouraging responsible outdoor recreation, promoting ethical hunting and angling practices, supporting safe firearms use, and helping protect the natural resources that make the Fernie area such a special place to live and explore. Whether someone is a long-time club member, a new resident, a family looking to get involved, or simply someone who values wildlife and wild places, the annual banquet offers an enjoyable way to connect with the club and contribute to its work.
Overall, the Fernie Rod and Gun Club annual banquet is both a celebration and a fundraiser—an evening of food, friendship, prizes, volunteer recognition, and community spirit in support of conservation, outdoor education, and the traditions that are deeply rooted in the Elk Valley. If you would like to participate, the banquet is usually held on the last Saturday of April.
