Art on the Deck - Bookmaking

Event Date(s):
Thursday, June 15, 2023

Art on the Deck is back and better than ever. Each week will be focusing on a different medium, with demos and facilitation led by experts in each respective medium! This is the perfect chance to learn something new or develop your skills with other like minded people. Art on the Deck takes place on the deck of the Fernie Arts Station.

Join Jolene Miner for an introductory bookmaking workshop where you will build a dual-paper, trifold, soft cover book. You will learn how to hand sew your book using waxed thread, and you keep your bookbinding needle when you’re done! Your book will have two sections, one with a weight of paper suited to dry media and one suited to wet media. Then, after assembling your book, you get to make it uniquely your own by collaging the cover with playful embellishments!

Jolene Miner uses juicy colours, vibrant patterns and rich textures to create mixed media paintings and paper based work. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan’s Fine Arts program, she now creates in her home studio in the bustling mountain town of Fernie, BC. Jolene uses a variety of mediums as her art practice flows between painting, drawing, bookmaking and collage. She finds inspiration in the unselfconscious exploration of materials and the transformational power of colour and line. You can find Jolene’s paper based work and handmade books at the Fernie Arts Co-op and Art Gallery Kimberley. Jolene also has an upcoming solo show at The Arts Station in March 2024, and she is excited to keep building momentum. (Insta: @joleneminerart)

Cost is $25 and includes materials. There will be a selection of decorative and vintage papers to play with, but feel free to bring any fun 2D objects you might want to collage onto your book (like tea bag tags, magazines, colourful packaging, tissue paper, dried leaves or flowers, whatever you have that tickles you!)
