Fernie Heritage Library have parterned with the Fernie Pride Society for another year with the Elk Valley Pride Society to host Smokii Sumac for Rainbow Reads.

Smokii Sumac is a Ktunaxa author, academic, and poet whose PhD in Indigenous Studies at Trent University centers on the question: how do we come home? As an Indigenous adoptee, intergenerational residential school survivor, and Two-Spirit person, Smokii’s lived experiences are deeply embedded into his art and research. Smokii is grateful and happy to have returned home to ʔamakʔis Ktunaxa where he lives near the banks of the Kootenay River — the river his ancestors have lived with/ on and near for millennia.

Smokii lives with his partner, their cats and chickens and his “big ‘ole rez dog” named Kootenay Lou. Save the date for this very special intimate and interactive reading and conversation.

Registration required, check back soon for registration link. The Elk Valley Pride Festival runs September 21st – 25th.
