Clay Basics

This workshop is designed for complete beginners who are looking to start their journey into the world of pottery. Instructor Dejana will teach the basics of pottery for handbuilding including preparing clay, tools & uses, pottery process, creating your first pieces and trimming them.

This workshop will take place via zoom. The first half will be watching and learning the basic processes. The second half will allow you to give it a go with a Clay Basics take home pack which includes required clay and tools. Dejana will be on hand to advise and answer your questions.

The take home pack is included in the price and must be collected from The Arts Station. Tools are to be returned along with your finished pieces to be fired on site. Bisque firing is also included in the price. You should prepare a space at home to complete your workshop such a kitchen table, plastic container for water. You should avoid disposing of this down the drain and instead tip outside in the corner of your yard.

Handbuilding is an ancient pottery-making technique that involves creating forms without a pottery wheel, using the hands, fingers, and simple tools. The most common handbuilding techniques are pinch pottery, coil building, and slab building.
