Ready to lace up and learn to play roller derby? Their new skater program runs for 8 weeks this fall. For $50 we provide all the gear and instruction. All you need to do is show up!

WHO CAN JOIN?
All skaters must be 18 years or older.
For younger skaters, our junior team will be hosting a learn to skate program in the new year. Stay tuned for more details later this fall.

INSURANCE
All participants must be insured before skating. The $50 program cost covers insurance, however, we will need to add you to our policy and have waivers signed before you can skate. We recommend all participants sign up early so we can process insurance before the first night.

WHAT IF I CAN'T SKATE?
Many of our amazing team members had never even put skates on before joining our new skater program. Our program starts at the beginning - with how to lace up and stand up!

WHAT IF I'M NOT FIT?
Many of our fierce team members had never played a sport before joining roller derby. Obviously, the more fit you are, the better. Fitness will help you pick up the skills quicker and help protect your body from injury. However, you can get fit with us. Our first phase of every season focuses on skill development, strength, endurance, and agility.

WHAT IF I DON'T WANT TO PLAY DERBY?
That's ok, you don't have to commit to joining the team in order to attend our Learn to Play Roller Derby program. This program is a great way to learn the basics of roller skating, no matter what your end goal is. Many of our skaters love jam skating (dancing on skates) and park skating (skating at the skate park). We will of course tell you how much we love derby, but are happy to support you on any skating path.

WHY WE LOVE ROLLER DERBY
Roller derby is empowering, inclusive, physically challenging, mentally challenging, intense, unlimited.

WHY WE LOVE AVALANCHE CITY
Our team instills confidence, inspires us, encourages fitness and health, creates athletes, is family.

WHAT GEAR DO I NEED?
Quad skates, knee pads, elbow pads, wrist guards, dual-impact certified helmet.
Borrowed gear is available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is recommended that skaters purchase their own gear as soon as possible as proper fit is important for safety.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Wear comfortable clothing – t-shirt and shorts or athletic pants/leggings
Bring a water bottle
Bring a friend! We've learned that you are more likely to attend if you are not alone. This support will also help you learn the skills faster and ensure your skating success.

HOW TO SIGN UP
You can message us on Facebook, either through this event or through our Avalanche City Roller Derby page. You can contact any Avalanche City skater you know. You can visit our table at the Fernie Fall Registration Fair, Monday September 9, 5:00-8:30pm, at the Community Centre. Or you can just show up on any night of our Learn to Play Roller Derby program (this option will not allow you to skate the first time, since insurance must be processed before skating).
