summer

Winters in Fernie can be a blast but they can also be busy, long and draining – especially for business managers and owners. And no winter has been longer or seemingly darker than the one we just collectively endured.

The RDEK is reminding residents about the need to be cautious around all waterways and prepared in the event of seasonal flooding as the warm temperatures this week have resulted in melting of the higher elevation snowpack.

“We are expecting to see water levels rise as the high-elevation snowpack melts,” says Information Officer, Loree Duczek. “We encourage everyone to stay clear of creek banks and rivers during this spring run-off and urge anyone who lives in an area prone to seasonal flooding to take steps to protect their properties.”

Look up from any Fernie patio on a summer evening and you may see some colourful action in the skies above you. Paragliding has been a part of mountain sports in Fernie for more than four decades, and the area is home to an active and rapidly growing flying community.

Very often a hiking outing has a destination to lure you from the comforts of your normal surroundings. Whether it is a river, lake, mountain ridge, or just a tranquil meadow, these attractions make us get out and explore. The hikes suggested in this article have the reward of walking amongst the big trees in the local forests.

2020 has thrown everyone for a loop. Reinventing your business, learning to work from home, becoming a teacher to your kids… there is no wonder the word of the year is “pivot!” Dave Morrison is no exception. This February he was hired as the new CEO of Island Lake Lodge and made the move back to the mountain town he fell in love with, something he has been working towards the majority of his life.

The Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) has been working with its member clubs, event organizers and landowners to get some fun events going for the summer. Due to COVID-19 the events have gone virtual. But you don’t need to slap on a race plate to challenge yourself. Check out the great options.

NEW RACE NIGHT!!

Due to the popular demand of the Thursday Night Race Series and our new limit on registrations, we have decided to run an extra night of racing this summer. This is an effort to try and give everyone an opportunity to take part in this fun summer series of racing.

All Youth and Kids will now race on Wednesday afternoons. Race details are the same as the Thursday Night Race Series (see below for more details) and the racecourse will be the same.
