It's Grim Down South

Down here in New Zealand, I live in a town called Dunedin which is right at the bottom of the South Island. Dunedin has the most horrendous weather of anywhere I’ve ever lived (a list which includes Ireland, the north of Scotland, and Alberta, fyi). Apparently the subantarctic region starts at 46 degrees south - Dunedin is situated at 45 degrees 52 minutes, a latitude of which I am all too aware as I bike to and from university in horizontal rain and ferocious southwesterlies, day after day. It is a terrible place.

From First Chair Fanatics to Freesking Alpine Racers

"There's nothing like first chair on a pow day!" I've heard this nearly as much as the popular, "No friends on a powder day!" and finally decided to experience it first hand.

7am comes quickly, even after a much anticipated snowfall of 15cm in Fernie, BC. Coffee in hand, gear loaded in the truck, we're en-route by 8. I'm nervous as I'm with a self-proclaimed first chair fanatic, meeting up with other first chair junkies. I know I'll be able to hold on for a while, or at least I hope.

Seasons are on the move. And with them come a whole host of changes, many of which shock you like hail in the face and leave you wondering where that Indian summer just went to. Going Out in Style

Em's Last Dual Slalom Run Emily Brydon finished off her impressive career in Nakiska at Nationals this March, winning her tenth National Championship, skiing the Dual Slalom in "style", and celebrating alongside her teammates with BC/DC at COP and onto Ceili's Pub for the evening. To say she was exhausted is an understatement, to say she was excited about what the future holds equally so...particularly the immediate future.

Emily Claims 10th Canadian Championship

NAKISKA, Alta. -- Rosemary Brydon wasn't holding back.

Adorned in a wild red and white Canadian Maple Leaf hat decorated with tiny bells, and clanging her cowbell wildly, Brydon greeted her daughter Emily with a warm hug and then posed for pictures on Wednesday morning after her run in the GMC Canadian alpine skiing championships women's super-G.

For years, Emily said, jokingly, she was "mortified" by the vision of her cheering mother near the finish line, but now, finally she can't get enough of it.

Dealing with Sore Muscles

The first day of the ski season is usually followed by sore muscles. Even those of us who have trained diligently at the gym to get ready for the winter season often find muscle soreness after day one on the slopes, though usually for a much smaller duration. Here are a few tips to help you out.
