poetry

Christmas time was a special time for my brother and I. Jake was younger, endlessly curious, and always ready for action. He hung on every word I spoke and loved everything I loved for a time.

As the fall burns up the living things and winter comes upon us, my mind wanders to those new mothers out there and the delicious anticipation of a baby. I am so fortunate to have two babies of my own and as they approach double digits, I am reminded of the slow moments of connection between the old and the new. The coming together of a family welcoming their newest member. The sleepless nights that bring on the delirious delicious love that babies bring.

The worst form of inequality is to try and make unequal things equal.

Equality implies individuality.

All who have died are equal.

As I continue to celebrate women while recognizing the theme of equality this month, I am reminded that none of us are created equal. We all possess varied strengths and weaknesses, the driving elements of who we are, changing all the time. I wanted to ask some of the women in my life, “what is the best part about being a woman?”

You know Vince Mo. He and his content filter through the valley like a carefully crafted season. He celebrates living and thriving here through the lens and spends most of his time adventuring, pursuing both work and play. Vince is a gem, sparkling with enthusiasm and gratitude. He is a gracious artist whose photos are seen all over the world!

It’s not every day that I discover a collaborator like Niki Sombrowski. I first met Niki as a high school senior, working hard on his education, playing Junior B hockey for the Fernie Ghostriders. Once his season was over, he was looking forward to playing elsewhere.

How do you honour yourself?
How do you make peace with the suffering that surrounds you?
How do you heal?

This month is a deep dive into self-discovery. As our social channels begin to widen and we look forward to connecting with others, ask yourself, what do you need now? You are different. Lean into your change.

This year I have been bestowed the great honor of being named Poet Laureate of The Fernie Academy. This means so much to me not only because I get to raise awareness around literacy during poetry month, simply put, I get to write poems and support my community with my skills as an artist. I also get to inspire young writers, (among them, my two strong boys) and encourage the creative impulse in kids and adults of all ages.

In a world riddled with worry and wonder, it is the greatest privilege to escape into the wild unknown for regeneration and reflection. But what happens when this lush haven of perpetual seeming landscape begins to vanish? Can protection or reclamation save our safe and bountiful sacred spaces? Environmental concerns are very real as we see the tragic effects of humankind on the planet Earth.

It goes without saying, but I’ll say it again, Fernie is synonymous with the term legendary: legendary snow, legendary views, legendary people. Steph Fleming is no exception. When she opened Infinitea eight years ago, some locals laughed at the idea of yet another coffee shop but what they didn’t know was that it would evoke so much more.
