“Life is the knife edge between tragedy and ridiculousness.”
-Lindsay Vallance

A year ago Amy Attalla and Sadie combined neighbourhood forces to create two pieces of poetry for the January 2018 issue. Now, one year later, the echo of Amy returns.

As I prepared this month’s poem solo, I travelled back in my mind. I went to a place that was just as uncertain as today. In going back, resolve and evolution play on the heartstrings.

This month, Sadie took to the streets, restaurants, trails, campsites, and a few other dimly lit corners of Fernie to beseech the masses about the choices they’ve made in life.

Working with Sage McBride of Shred Kelly fame for our music issue was a no brainer. She is creative, curious, and accomplished.

Getting their inspiration from photographs this month to conjure their curiosity.

There is no denying what an incredible community we continue to build here in Fernie but in a broader sense.

Family On the Planet, Planetary Scenario
by SADIE ROSGEN Featuring Creative Minds Preschool

As the late Whitney Houston sang, I believe the children are our future.

So how do you write a poem with 16 four and five-year-olds who are learning how to read and write? Easy. They have a lot to say. Their arms shoot up in excitement as they tell you everything about their incredible lives with a few sage words about how we all ought to do better.

A fantastical, often rhyming, love letter that is meant to be sung, danced or played (player’s choice).

“Inside A Year”

I pace the labyrinth of this young year

I am transfixed
a captive audience to my astonishment

a suspended piece of flesh floating fervently past the wide open doorway inside my mind where I find the words

RENEWAL
FORMATION
ANOTHER ROTATION

an explanation for the beginning
begin
inside
within
