A year ago this month I lost my best friend, Fezzik the Dog. Fernie is a dog town. Most people understand what losing a pet means to us humans.

Is your dog snuggling by the fire, dreaming of fresh grass, alpine meadows and sunny days at the lake? Not all dogs are built for Rocky Mountain winter weather and by this time of year, some are feeling the effects of the long cold days.

Loving a dog may be different than a human, but it’s certainly not subpar. The beauty in their inability to verbally communicate with us is that instead, we naturally develop an emotional connection on a different level than those who we can share words with.

If there’s one thing everyone living in Fernie can agree on it’s that we’re all so lucky to call this place home! Especially if you’re an adopted dog like Gus and London, who hit the jackpot in finding humans who choose to live here.

The beauty of dogs is that they enrich our lives in so many ways. We find ourselves training our dogs to suit our lifestyles and in reality, they end up teaching us so much more. There are lots of ways you can return the favour, and one of those is by providing a healthy diet.
