Kootenays

Event Date(s):
Monday, March 7, 2022
Time:
7:30pm - 8:30pm

Learn about bats in our communities! Join the Fernie Heritage Library Monday, March 7th at 7:30pm as we discover the secret lives of our amazing Kootenay bats, including the challenges these small mammals face.

Mandy of the BC Community Bat Project will talk about bats and bat habitat, conservation issues, and the role of citizen scientists in helping us understand and protect these important animals. This event will prepare you for using the new library bat packs. Bring your batty questions and stay on to chat.

The RDEK is reminding residents about the need to be cautious around all waterways and prepared in the event of seasonal flooding as the warm temperatures this week have resulted in melting of the higher elevation snowpack.

“We are expecting to see water levels rise as the high-elevation snowpack melts,” says Information Officer, Loree Duczek. “We encourage everyone to stay clear of creek banks and rivers during this spring run-off and urge anyone who lives in an area prone to seasonal flooding to take steps to protect their properties.”

On August 14, 2017 Council received a report from the late Lloyd Smith, our Director of Leisure Services on the condition of our public works building. For those of us in the room, it was startling.

“A number of buildings located at the public works yard have not been maintained adequately over the last thirty years. In 2016, the Quonset building was decommissioned after engineers identified structural issues. These issues had been previously outlined in a report completed and supplied to the City in 1997 but were never addressed.”

The City of Fernie is pleased to support our local food-service providers by promoting pop-up COVID-safe dining options throughout the city.  Picnic tables will be installed on 6th Street, the Station Square parking lot, on City Hall grounds starting on May 21st in time for the May long weekend.

Volunteers are the heart of the RDEK’s rural communities. If you know an outstanding volunteer in one of the rural areas in the region, the RDEK encourages you to nominate them for the 2021 Electoral Area Volunteer of the Year award.

Nomination forms are now available and, as it has in past years, the Regional District will be honouring one outstanding volunteer or couple from each of its six Electoral Areas.

There is nothing that creates a sense of community more than people coming together for a great cause! On April 2-4, 81 people ran or walked 4 miles (or biked 16km) every 4 hrs for 48hrs to raise funds to contribute to the start-up of Foundry East Kootenay. The Foundry will offer young people ages 12-24 health and wellness resources, services and supports online and through integrated service.

The Elk Valley will once again be part of the regional organics program after the Elk Valley Directors reversed a decision earlier this year and voted in favour of re-joining the East Kootenay Regional Organics Strategy and constructing an organics processing facility at the Sparwood Transfer Station.
