Back by popular demand! Fernie Alpine Resort is adding one more specialty hike on Fossils & Geology to their summer hiking program!

A 380 million year old history lesson: Fossils & Geology

Why are the rocks in the Lizard range upside down? And how does Polar Peak tell the story of a mass extinction event 360 million years ago? Find out the answers to these questions and more as we traverse ancient sea beds, uncovering the remnants of the sea creatures that lived in ancient times.

Mountains surround us. We live, work, and play amongst them. Where you have a bunched up rug, you have a mountain. And where you have Prairies and the Canadian Shield, you have hardwood floors.

The secret history of trees: Forestry

Uncover the story behind the burnt out stumps that dot much of the mountain and how they’re part of a curse from Fernie’s past. Explore the mystical, 800 year old Old Growth Grove and discover how it gives away the secret of Fernie’s incredible amounts of powder snow in winter. Fernie Alpine Resort's specialty hikes are fully guided by their experienced, professional staff. Hikes are moderate difficulty, and are 3 hours in length.

Lift ticket or season pass is required as all specialty hikes are lift accessed.

There is an otherworldly place just outside of Fernie. In this place, water carves its way out of the earth, and over geologic timespans, creates a massive hole in the side of a mountain. At this interface, darkness intermingles with light effortlessly to create an entirely separate ecosystem from the surroundings.

Fernie is world renowned for its easy access to the great outdoors. One only has to stand anywhere in town to look towards the mountains and imagine a variety of outdoorsy pursuits.
