Fernie Chamber

The Fernie Chamber of Commerce and the Elk Valley Economic Initiative (EVEI) are excited to announce the hiring of a brand-new position – the Elk Valley Economic Recovery Advisor. After a thorough recruitment process, Taylor Jenkins has been appointed to the new full-time role on a 12-month contract and officially started on Monday 14 June.

Winters in Fernie can be a blast but they can also be busy, long and draining – especially for business managers and owners. And no winter has been longer or seemingly darker than the one we just collectively endured. With the added strain of a second (then third) wave of the pandemic and the introduction of tougher restrictions that included not having people over to your household and limits to eating out – this past winter was challenging, stressful and lonely for a lot of us.

Local businesses, organizations and the tourism sector have endured many challenges and hardships during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Starting April 29th until June 20th the LOYAL to LOCAL #FernieStrong initiative aims to further support local by rewarding local spending.

Like individuals, businesses are increasingly turning to look at the impact of their operations on the environment. Being a sustainable company is no longer just about being financially sustainable, but also demonstrating corporate responsibility and leadership in becoming greener. There are simple things that a business can do to be more environmentally friendly without having to sacrifice your bottom line. Here are ten of them.

The Fernie Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held on Thursday 15 April (from 9:30am to 11:00am) and is open to all members and the public.

As we recognize and celebrate International Women’s Day this month, I wanted to shine a spotlight on an organization that I think is doing great work supporting female entrepreneurs and business owners. The Women’s Enterprise Centre (WEC) was launched as a female-led, non-profit organization in BC back in 1995. Since then, WEC has helped power women-led businesses in a variety of ways and continues to offer support and mentoring to this day.

Join the Fernie Chamber of Commerce as they co-host their next Business Banter & Beer (BBB) networking event with Freyja Kootenay Boutique.

BBB's are an excellent way for our local businesses to showcase their space and what they are up to. All are welcome to learn more about each month's featured business and to network with fellow members of the Fernie business community. And did we mention there is beer?! As always, the BBBs are free to attend. Drop in for a quick chat or stay for the whole duration.

More than just any other industry, tourism requires collaboration and partnering locally with residents, businesses, user groups and organisations, as well as with regional and provincial organisations. Done right, tourism can bring many benefits to communities; doing it right requires proactive planning and ongoing governance for community success.
