Fernie offers some of the finest cross-country skiing in all of the Kootenays. The Fernie Nordic Society offers nordic skier only trails at the Fernie Golf and Country Club in town and at the Elk Valley Nordic Centre near Mount Fernie Provincial Park. There is also Nordic skiing to be found on Island Lake Road from the lower parking lot, in the Montane area of Fernie, and up at Fernie Alpine Resort. So to help you make the most of it, we’ve put together a few of our favourite loops for you to enjoy!

If you’re visiting Fernie with your family, you will be happily surprised to find the number of amenities available here for the younger cohort (and also those young at heart). As the number of families continues to grow, so does the programming, facilities and events geared to this market. Here are our top ten for you to explore this winter!

Sometimes, when the snow flies covering the Valley in a blanket of white, fluffy powder, instead of heading to the hill with the masses, a solo walk meandering in the trees is just what you need. Here are three of my three favourite places to “get lost” in winter.

Celebrate some Holiday Cheer as Fernie Alpine Resort welcomes Santa to the slopes! Get out and ski a couple of turns with the man in the big red suit in the morning and then get your picture taken with Santa in the daylodge in the afternoon. Get a traditional picture with Santa or try out our new Santa Photo Booth! No need to bring your camera, Santa’s little helpers will email the photos to you FREE of charge!

One thing about Fernie is how easy it is to choose how social you want to be without needing to make plans. You can turn up to free gallery openings, participate in group bike rides, sign up for workshops or join a regular yoga class and be surrounded by friends and friendly faces, all ready to chat and maybe grab a coffee or a beer afterwards.

Deep Down Yonder is a multi instrumentalist/Producer who combines live instruments such as five string banjo, guitar, bass, dobro and harmonica with homemade electronic beats, samples, and synth pads. His sound is a whole new style of danceable, multi-layered, renegade electro-mountain music that blends genres and walks the line between country, funk, and psychedelic four on the floor house.
