Elk Valley Pride Festival

It’s pretty common in Fernie to see the same faces at multiple events, especially when it comes to volunteers. These people are dedicated and passionate, wanting not only to be part of the excitement but also in ensuring these events continue to take place and are the best they can be. If you know Lori Bradish, it comes to no surprise to you that she is one of these people.

Celebrate National Coming Out Day in concert with award winning non-binary musician and author Rae Spoon.

They have released nine solo albums spanning folk, indie rock and electronic genres and have toured across Canada and internationally. Rae was the subject and composer of the score for the National Film Board–produced musical-documentary My Prairie Home, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2014. Rae owns and runs an indie record label called Coax Records that has released fifteen albums by Canadian and international artists.

IFF in celebration of the Elk Valley Pride Festival is screening The Miseducation of Cameron Post for its monthly offering.

After her clandestine romance with her female best friend is revealed, Cameron Post’s conservative aunt and guardian sends her away to undergo conversion therapy. “Chloë Grace Moretz puts in a career-best turn as a teen sent to ‘pray away the gay’ at a Christian camp in Desiree Akhavan’s compassionate LGBT story.” – Jordan Hoffman, The Guardian

The Knox United Church in Fernie, BC would like to invite everyone in the LGBTQ+ community to join their weekly worship service on Sunday, October 14th, 2018 during the Elk Valley Pride Festival week.

Because they DEFINITELY don't want to miss the Big Gay Brunch themselves, they promise the service will be done by 10:45am, in time for everyone to get themselves down to the Park Place Lodge for brunch.

All are welcome, the Knox United Church has a strong practice of welcoming and celebrating diversity.

A movie double-header! Gross Indecency documents the story of Everett Klippert, the last Canadian to be jailed for homosexuality. Kevin Allen, of the Calgary Gay History Project and Fernie Pride board member, tries to understand Klippert and his place in LGBTQ history. Kevin will be on hand to introduce the film.

The feature film Transformer, follows the story of former US Marine and decorated bodybuilder Janae Marie Kroczaleski who came out as a transgender woman in 2015 and how her public life as Matt “Kroc” Kroczaleski came quickly crashing down around her.

Breathing Lessons author Andy Sinclair will discuss his latest book with Fernie’s own Angie Abdou, in the new Fernie Distillery.

Breathing Lessons is a bold and explicit debut novel by one of the most visceral new voices in gay fiction. Of the book, Angie Abdou says "Readers will recognize themselves in these brave and daring scenes, even when they least want to.

You can make a lantern to use during the Festival of Lights parade and/or help make one for the illuminated Memory Lane installation created by Elk Valley Hospice volunteers, Fernie artists and community participants.  If you bring a picture of a loved one, family member, friend or pet we will print it onto your lantern. Memory Lane will be displayed during the festival of lights on November 10th, showcasing the diversity of the people shaping Fernie’s present and past.
