Elk River Alliance

Fernie’s annual raft race organized by Canyon Raft was a resounding splash, with plenty of fun costumes and fierce paddling. Every year, all proceeds from this event are donated to the Elk River Alliance, and this year the event raised $2,880!

The event was held on Wednesday, June 19th, and saw 144 participants. Canyon Raft Company has been organizing the raft race since 1997, fostering Fernie’s sense of community and adventure. Tunnel 49 was an instrumental help for this event, by adding their guides, rafts, and gear.

Do you love our watershed? Do you want to learn how you can make a difference to healthy water in the Elk Valley? The Elk River Alliance (ERA) Open House and Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held Thursday July 11th, at the Fernie Legion. The Open House will take place from 5:30-7:15 PM, followed by the AGM from 7:30-8:30PM.

Spring is starting to bloom in full colours, and the Elk River Alliance is seeking volunteer help to aid in streambank restoration. Over the last month, volunteers collected over 2000 plant cuttings or “livestakes”, adding to the 600 stored from the previous fall. So far, over 1000 livestakes have already been planted, but more help is needed.

There are dozens of organizations and hundreds of volunteers in our community working hard to make this a great place to live! In 2024 this column will introduce you to the devoted people putting unpaid hours into our small town to make it kinder, more compassionate, safer, sustainable and beautiful.

Let’s inaugurate this series with the Elk River Alliance.

In high school, I volunteered as a youth lawyer to help kids clear their driving records by assigning community service. It was amazing to help people in real and meaningful ways, but as I got older volunteering lost its lustre. I began to feel that volunteer work was reserved for the well-off to feel less guilty about their well-offness. Now as Stage two of my nine-month Canadian Conservation Corps program comes to a close, I’ve learned that volunteering can change your relationship with work and re-route your path back to something that provides meaning in your life.

Elk River Alliance Trivia is BACK to celebrate the annual release of Fernie Distillers’ Saskatoon Berry Liqueur!

This summer, ERA volunteers collected an incredible 16 kg of Saskatoon berries, which Fernie Distillers turned into a new batch of the popular liqueur. Bring your friends, answer some general knowledge questions, and have a chance to win some awesome prizes!

Top Prize is a Day pass for Fernie Alpine Resort donated by RCR.

It’s fall and the Elk Valley is painted a shining golden hue. As cottonwood trees prepare for winter, they lose their green chlorophyll leaving only the yellow/orange “carotenoid” pigments behind. Just weeks ago, the dense canopy of these towering giants cast a deep shadow; a welcome respite from the summer heat.
