community

Fernie is home to an impressive number of women making things happen in our community. From those with roles in local government and organizations to those who have created and operate businesses lining our downtown to those providing support through educational and medical positions. It is so refreshing and encouraging.

City Council discusses the Fuel Management Prescription Program, the Firesmart Grant Program and the Fernie Municipal Police Unit Agreement, as well as bylaws and the providing 50 family pool passes for the 2018 Bike to Work week.

Being without Internet and cable at home our Editor started noticing how different she felt. Fantastic. Confident. Happy doing what I’m doing, when I’m doing it. Being present.

In the hustle and bustle of our 21st-century, multitasking, 24-hour news cycle, multi-home/vehicle/job, blended family lifestyles, the constant prompting to simplify and slow down can be as stressful as the lives we lead. And then you ask Fernie-ites how they simplify and they look at you quizzically; how do you simplify a life that is already removed from having/being/wanting “too much?”

In the early 2000’s I was regularly commuting to Fernie on weekends. With each year, I noticed subtle changes to the downtown. New shops, cafes or restaurants opening their doors, some making it through the off seasons, others not. One not so subtle addition that seemed to be standing strong was Hempire. Its bright colours and distinctive name were eye-catching, and immediately piqued my curiosity.
