Columbia Basin Trust

This coming year the Trust is turning 25. It’s a chance to celebrate all that we have been able to accomplish together with people and communities. It’s also a time to recognize and honour those who saw an opportunity in 1995 to create this unique, regional organization that would support the efforts by the people of the Columbia Basin to create a legacy of social, economic and environmental well-being in the region most affected by the Columbia River Treaty. The focus then was on the future, and in this coming year, we’ll be asking residents to look ahead to the next 25 years.

Many families in the Columbia Basin rely upon child care. To help meet this need for quality spaces, 67 child care providers in 24 communities will be creating up to 198 new spaces and improving 1,256 spaces. These projects are being undertaken with nearly $1.4 million from Columbia Basin Trust’s Child Care Capital Grants.

Outdoor public spaces like parks, downtown cores and waterfronts will become even more welcoming as 12 communities receive over $1.9 million to create, restore or enhance these locations. The funding comes from Columbia Basin Trust’s Community Outdoor Revitalization Grants.

There’s a new online source for people seeking easy-to-understand information on climate change specific to communities throughout the Columbia Basin and Boundary regions. The Columbia Basin Climate Source website - basinclimatesource.ca - was initiated by Columbia Basin Trust and developed by Selkirk College’s Applied Research and Innovation Centre.

Walk, bike, hike, run or however you enjoy the front or backcountry, trails are critical for recreation. Around the Basin, 25 projects will be adding to or improving the region’s trails, with nearly $400,000 from Columbia Basin Trust’s Trail Enhancement Grants.

The Fernie & District Arts Council are delighted to share with you the selected artist for the Fernie Mural Project; Michael Hepher with his piece, "All Kinds of Beauty".

As introduced in the June edition, the Built Heritage Grants, funded by Columbia Basin Trust and administered by Heritage BC, are helping to restore some of Fernie’s most significant and historic buildings. One of these is the Fernie Museum.

2017 and 2018 saw extreme wildfire activity with a record number of fires across BC and in the Basin. Through its Community Wildfire Education Grants the Trust is supporting the efforts of Basin communities and residents to prepare for and reduce the impacts of wildfires occurring within or adjacent to Basin communities.
