Shortly before 7:30 PM on May 22nd 1902, the local community was devastated when a gas and coal dust explosion killed at least 128 men in the No. 2 and 3 mines of Coal Creek, BC.

At the time, the Coal Creek explosion of 1902 was the 2nd largest mine disaster in Canada and one of the largest in North America. To date, it remains as the second largest in BC, and third largest in Canada.

All are welcome to attend a free event commemorating this tragedy, to remember the lives lost and celebrate our community's resiliency.

The RDEK Board of Directors has approved $100,000 in funding through the Electoral Area A portion of the Elk Valley Mine Tax Sharing Funds to support the installation of a temporary bridge over Morrissey Creek and restore access to the Morrissey and Coal Creek Areas.
