clawhammer press

When I first opened the Clawhammer Press in downtown Fernie, I laid out the gallery with enough space to host live music. I knew that unless I invited bands to play there, I wouldn’t get to hear very much of the live acoustic music I love. My plan was to grow a small audience that would be engaged, respectful, and loyal—and it worked!

Spring is springing and who doesn't love a good studio sale!

Clawhammer Press, Sarah Pike Pottery and Passionfruit Pottery are banding together to have a sale at Sarah Pike's Studio (1480 McDonald Ave, Fernie) from 2-5pm on Saturday, May 13th (the day before Mother's Day for the record).

They will all have NEW works there so come and get excited about warmer weather. If the weather is nice you'll stand around outside and share some good chats too.

There are times when artists’ roles in our community, and in our society, feels a bit insignificant. The curse of our sensitive personalities is that we tend to see things that need changing—coupled with the curse of the desire to want to improve, grow and share what we learn—means there is a constant tension in our lives between what is, and what we think could be. As I stand at the easel, I’m often thinking about why I’m painting. What good is another mountain scene when there is war in Ukraine? How can I make things that help shift ideas and perspectives? How can I make my art relevant to the climate crisis?

I think we can all agree that there are some hard economic times ahead and being that most of us creatives choose lifestyle over stability, I suspect those struggles will affect artists disproportionately. It may be a hard winter for some of us, so it’s a good thing we are out of the box thinkers.

A few years ago I borrowed a friend’s car for a road trip. As I wound my way up the Kootenay Pass, the only music available was a stack of unmarked, burned CDs jammed between the seats. As I cycled through those discs each new track was an adventure.

Legend has it that after producing the breakthrough hit album The Joshua Tree for Irish rockers U2, Daniel Lanoise purchased a mansion in LA and instead of filling it with furniture and art, he left it sparsely decorated—almost ascetic.

Local artists Kyle Hamilton, Tara Higgins, Laura Nelson and Mike Hepher have been working hard to create magical gifts this holiday season through the Alley Gallery Pop-up of Local Artists. Beautiful paintings and images will be available for purchase the three weekends leading up to Christmas, Thursday to Saturday from 12 to 5pm. This space can be accessed behind the Musuem and LIbrary in the alley, or via 2nd Ave by going through the furniture shop.

While some enjoy revisiting old memories for the good feelings they bring, Michael has made a career of setting up residence in the past and making a living there. Clawhammer Press is a business quite literally built on a foundation of nostalgia.
