City of Fernie

More than ever before, it is easy to rent a spare room to a complete stranger for their week-long vacation or to rent your entire house while vacationing in Mexico. However, prior to posting that listing you should be aware of a few things.

Both visitors and locals will see a new local ski shuttle bus on the roads for this coming ski season thanks to a partnership between the City of Fernie, Tourism Fernie, the Fernie Chamber of Commerce and Resorts of the Canadian Rockies.

The City held its fourth Press Conference at Red Tree Lodge including comments from Fire Chief Ted Ruiter, Fernie Mayor Mary Giuliano, Karen Smith-Myles, sister to the City of Fernie's Director of Leisure Services who we lost on the 17th, and Cheryl McDougall, a member of the provincial Disaster Social Services team in Fernie offering their support to our community.

The latest staff reports, bylaws and reports of the committees in this edition of the Council Connection.

Lately I’ve been musing on the term “public servant” and the concept of humility overall.

As politicians, we are seen cutting ribbons, making speeches and presenting awards—performing the function of “dignitaries.” It is important for all of us to remember that elected officials' primary function is to serve the community. It seems like an ironic contrast, to be both dignitaries and servants, a contrast that may create internal conflict.

This is an insider's report on City of Fernie activities and aspirations. If you wonder how local government works, or want more insight into certain issues, send your questions in.
