Out of the Box: A Dumpster Art Project’. Out of the Box is a public art initiative by the Arts Station in collaboration with Southeast Disposal. Project facilitation is provided by the Fernie & District Arts Council and a volunteer committee. Out of the Box is a project in which 10 commercial trash and recycling dumpsters will be transformed into works of public art by regional artists.

To me, art is the second-best thing after time in nature. Through my work, I try to bring the outside in. I don’t have any rules or set methods, I am constantly influenced by our local landscapes and wildlife, and materials that are either found or recycled. It’s even more satisfying to use something that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into something that can be appreciated again.

This year I have been bestowed the great honor of being named Poet Laureate of The Fernie Academy. This means so much to me not only because I get to raise awareness around literacy during poetry month, simply put, I get to write poems and support my community with my skills as an artist. I also get to inspire young writers, (among them, my two strong boys) and encourage the creative impulse in kids and adults of all ages.
