"Rewired: Transform from within"

Artist Statement

My adventures mold me and each canvas becomes my journal to translate what I discover through my wanders. My art practice began as a way to feel nurtured by nature’s magnificence when I was
experiencing physical and cognitive limits due to injury, and it continues to immerse me in what I love most.

In a small town like Fernie, our dedicated community spaces are sacred places in nature where we all get to play. Often these spaces are maintained by the City and/or by the efforts of the many dedicated volunteers. One of my favourite places to hit is the Fernie Rail Yard Dog Park. Its gorgeous off leash areas and paved walking trails are stunning.

There are times when artists’ roles in our community, and in our society, feels a bit insignificant. The curse of our sensitive personalities is that we tend to see things that need changing—coupled with the curse of the desire to want to improve, grow and share what we learn—means there is a constant tension in our lives between what is, and what we think could be. As I stand at the easel, I’m often thinking about why I’m painting. What good is another mountain scene when there is war in Ukraine? How can I make things that help shift ideas and perspectives? How can I make my art relevant to the climate crisis?

My partner Anie and I have been together for more than 20 years—long enough to know the ups and downs of long-term love. Our culture tries to tell us that love is simple and pure. Humans have always been drawn to this idea, defined as the sudden onset of an overwhelming feeling that pulsates between two people for time and all eternity.

What is love? (Besides a banger 90s hit.) It comes in so many different forms, shapes, and colours that you can put in what you like, take from it what you will, interpret and feel it depending on time of the day or where you are in your journey through life.
