art

I grew up in Cape-Breton, Nova Scotia on a small island known as Isle Madame. There were no ski hills and I did not love the winters. But I did love art.

When I was a kid, I submitted entries to just about every art contest I could, often taking the top prize. I absolutely loved drawing and colouring and was certain that one day, I would go to art school and become an artist.

But that was not in the cards.

Walking along 2nd Avenue today you would be surprised to learn that 20 years ago the arts scene in Fernie was less than vibrant. Today, a stroll through our historic downtown is a cultural shopping feast.

Diversity is the name of the game in the Fernie Arts Scene and within a three-block radius you can find an array of makers and artists. Painters, stain glass artists, blacksmiths, photographers, weavers, felters, potters, leatherworkers, jewellers, Fernie represents it all.

To me, art is the second-best thing after time in nature. Through my work, I try to bring the outside in. I don’t have any rules or set methods, I am constantly influenced by our local landscapes and wildlife, and materials that are either found or recycled. It’s even more satisfying to use something that would otherwise end up in a landfill and turn it into something that can be appreciated again.
