Fernie Fix Blogs

It's the Eve of New Year's Eve, what are your options for ringing in 2012 in Fernie?

Here's a run down of what's happening in town and at the hill.

Picnic - sit down three course dinner followed by DJ Friendly Fire and dancing. You have the option of doing either or both! $50 for just dinner, $75 for both, or $25 for the DJ and Dance portion. 250-423-7666

Central - They have DJ's Alus Cognito, Nathan Kelly and David Adams lined up for a big party. Tickets can be purchased in advance for $20 at The Central or Northern.

What makes a great plate of nachos?

Whether it's in the winter months while watching hockey or chilling out with a group of friends on a patio on a hot summer's day, nachos have become one of the most popular bar foods in Canada.

Christmas in Fernie is magical, it’s that simple. The mountains, the snow, the lights, and the carolers on the street corner … the Christmas spirit is everywhere I turn. But what I love the most this season is the genuine desire from local business owners wanting to put smiles on faces of their Christmas shoppers.

Here is a little story about why (once again) I love and appreciate Fernie …

Here is the second installment of some of my favourite holiday and gift gems you can find locally! Happy Christmas celebrating and shopping, round three will be posted next week along with extended shopping hours at our local shops.

1. Hockey skates and equipment. Your kids will always remember playing pond hockey, and there’s nothing quite like a game on the Annex Pond to make you feel youthful. The Gear Hub sells used equipment at a good price, or try Canadian Tire.

As winter falls upon us and Christmas starts to linger in the air I know that the weekly Fernie commute is here. I’ve driven through winter white outs, unbelievable wind storms and multiple wildlife crossings. Yet I relish the drive. This weekly road trip is a time where I can talk with my kids and spouse at length … where we shape our future and begin to decompress after the work week. And before I know, it I am sitting by the fire, a glass of wine in hand feeling the Fernie buzz.

Working on the January edition with our staff Christmas and Anniversary celebration coming up this evening, I created a playlist and enjoyed my first Christmas music session of the season to help get me into the mood! Enjoy, and happy holidays from us to you!!

Ruskay Adventure Blog Entry # 7…Greenland Pack Ice

It's difficult to select "favourites" when there are so many ridiculously talented individuals in Fernie producing amazing products or offering top of the line services or products. But let's face it, we all have our regular purchases that when compiled make up our lists. Here is a random list of some of mine, and I encourage you to share yours in a comment as we're all looking for a little local inspiration for the holiday season this time of year! Part two will include YOUR recommendations!

All right, this one is upbeat as we are celebrating five years, the ski season, and Christmas on its way! Hope it gets you on your feet and dancing - a few new, a few old school.

Thanks to all who read the Fix, write for the Fix, take pics for the Fix... we love you. And thanks to Heather for a couple of song suggestions!

Well I guess it has been a while since the Ruskay Adventure Blog has been updated. I could make up several excuses, but the main reason is that I have simply been adventuring! I have recently landed back in Fernie, BC after a long and rewarding summer season. The quick stat being 11 trips in 15 weeks! The highlight for me by far was guiding a Sea Kayak Expedition in Greenland.
