Fernie Fix Magazine
A question I often hear asked is how the Fernie Fix originated. Well, it was a fast and furious beginning for me, and an exciting and busy time for my creators Vanessa and Krista.

I think I realized that my job in life was to make art when I was in Grade 4. Actually I know it was Grade 4 and I remember the exact moment. We all had a cheesy art task to paint some still life fruit with tempra paints…everyone’s work looked like they had done it with the wrong hand but mine was surprisingly accurate (for a Grade 4). My teacher came up to me and said, “I know what you will be when you grow up.” He was right.
The Day the Music Lived
We’ve all heard the cries that the music industry is dying, but the cries are more bombastic than anything. Music is older than writing and older than words, and it’s impossible to imagine a world without it. A good band or DJ sets the mood, whether it’s wafting out of a home stereo or blaring out of the bar’s double-stacks.
Grooming the Hill
It’s 11pm at night and as I am getting ready to go check out Fernie’s bar scene Blair Craig is hitting the snooze button on his alarm clock.
Walking into town the snow is falling and I can see a sprinkling of lights dotted around the ski hill, as snow cats crawl through the night sculpting the mountain so we can rip it up in the morning.
By the time I get to the bar and order a drink Blair has made his ‘lunch’, picked up his 7-11 coffee and is driving up to the ski hill to start his 8-hour shift. It’s midnight.
In the Pursuit of Happiness
Last Remembrance day I attended an amazing presentation by Eva Olsson on the subject of the Jewish Holocaust during the Second World War. Her stories impressed me because I guess I hadn’t realized the depth that prejudice can reach.
It’s an interesting concept, prejudice. Babies are not born with the ability to sense racial differences. Whenever I have watched children play together, it doesn’t matter what language they speak, never mind what colour skin they have. They look beneath that.
Dealing with Sore Muscles
The first day of the ski season is usually followed by sore muscles. Even those of us who have trained diligently at the gym to get ready for the winter season often find muscle soreness after day one on the slopes, though usually for a much smaller duration. Here are a few tips to help you out.

Let me tell a story.
A couple weeks ago while getting ready to take a vacation, a friend decided to bleach his well. The once every six months or so cleansing of the water. He dosed it good, waited and started the well back up. Nothing. He reset the motor. Nothing. He heard the solenoid click, but no motor, no water.
Island Lake Lodge: the cookbook
I buy books for Christmas presents. Always and for everybody. Whenever possible, I stick to Canadian books. For the price of a decent bottle of wine, a book gives the recipient an art object, hours of entertainment, inspiration, a space for productive introspection, a cast of imaginary friends, and an excuse to spend the day curled up by the fire.
The Informant
The American film industry has produced many films about corporate and political corruption and the brave men and women who fight against it. From Eight Days of the Condor to The Insider, Silkwood to Michael Clayton, all of these films feature protagonists who worked for truth and justice, and who, while flawed, are still likeable, and the kind of people you want to cheer for.

Favourite Fix Moments
I have to say that my favourite Fix moment was the very first one that I picked up, which was the very first one that was published. It was filled with a sense of possibility and excitement—which is a real reflection of the town in which it was born. I don’t know if Krista and Vanessa knew that they were embarking on the adventure of a lifetime when they started out, but they must by now. At three years old, the Fix has started to form its very own personality, and it has been fun to watch it grow.

CADS Ski System
I recently read a feature in the Fernie Fix which made me think about the difficulty some people face in pursuing their passions when your body is no longer in optimal form. About three years ago that was where I was.
