Emily Claims 10th Canadian Championship

NAKISKA, Alta. -- Rosemary Brydon wasn't holding back.

Adorned in a wild red and white Canadian Maple Leaf hat decorated with tiny bells, and clanging her cowbell wildly, Brydon greeted her daughter Emily with a warm hug and then posed for pictures on Wednesday morning after her run in the GMC Canadian alpine skiing championships women's super-G.

For years, Emily said, jokingly, she was "mortified" by the vision of her cheering mother near the finish line, but now, finally she can't get enough of it.

Favourite Shots of 2010

It could not have been a more perfect day for this shot. I knew that I wanted to shoot towards Lost Boys Pass since the inversion looked perfect and that’s where the sun was shining. Local rippers Mikey Witlox and Connor Gliege had gone up the day before to build this great stepdown in anticipation of the inversion. Having the sun in the shot was perfect since every time the riders hit the jump a lot of snow was kicked up and the sun would shine right through. A beautiful day with great riders goes a long way.

I'd Rather Switch than Fight

There was a time, not so very long ago, that people only had one computer and it wasn't connected to any network. This wasn't back when I was in high school and had to outrun dinosaurs to get home for lunch. This was post-Star Wars. How times have changes in just two decades.

Now most households have high speed network access. Most have more than one computer. Some have wireless and wired networks in their house. And in at least one of them, right now, someone is wondering, what all those boxes between them and the wall do. If that's you, this column is for you.

Act and Be Remembered

A bird does not sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song.
-Chinese proverb

An elderly man sits back against the down of his pillow and opens his eyes. The sparkle next to his bed causes him to turn. His young granddaughter sat quietly, waiting to bid her last good-byes. She smiles as he watches her. He could see that she had a question so he reached over and patted her hand. The young girl finally spoke, “Poppa, I was just wondering, why are you, you? What should I remember?”

Pumpkin Cheesecake

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of food. When I was 6 years old and living with my family in suburban Toronto my parents sold everything we owned and bought a 27’ Shepherd Cruiser. The family (including my 3 year old sister and 8 year old brother) moved aboard in early spring. We spent the next few of months traveling through the Intracoastal Waterways with a short ocean crossing from Florida to Freeport, Grand Bahamas Island where we settled for a few years.

This skilled and versatile team consists of moms, artists, professionals, tradeswomen, successful entrepreneurs, and many avid skiers! This team was originally started by a group of FAR women staff members for the purposes of intermission entertainment for the classic men's Fernie vs. Kimberley hockey match. Since then the team has grown into a talented, cohesive, fun-loving group of friends.

FSS Alumni Project

Frank Lento, a remarkable Fernie citizen always working behind the scenes. We have tried in the past to feature this man and it wasn’t until this project came up that he agreed to meet – but we could only talk about the project. Throughout the conversation snippets of past projects and achievements drifted into the conversation, swiftly followed with, “Don’t publish that.” All right, to the project which will have the town buzzing and proud within minutes of viewing.
