Fernie local, Carter Nieuwesteeg has returned to the vally after having graduated from University, ready to set down roots and give back to the community. A competitive mountain bike racer and certified NCCP Coach, Carter is offering an Athlete2Athlete Coaching Program (A2A) for youth in the Fernie area this summer.

"Coaching prgraoms are geared toward assisting youg, ambitious riders progress into grassroots and provincial level racing, something that has always been missing in Fernie's cycling community. There was no sort of team, coach or organization to help guide youth athletes when I began racing years ago. I find it very unfortunate that a world-class riding destination does not have such programs in place to support its taltented youth riders through each stage of their development in cycing. A2A will rplace the missing link," Carter says.

The program runs May 11 to September 11 (with no group activity until social distancing directions are lifted by the Provincial Government and Cycling Canada) and includes group rides, dryland sessions, one-on-one meetings, an online training plan through TrainingPeaks, and support from Coach Carter at local races throughout the season. This program is designed to accommodate academic demands, with weekly exercise being outside the school day during the spring months.

Athletes should feel comfortable and willing to learn how to ride advanced trails, aspire to compete in grassroot or povinical level events, live in the Fernie or Sparwood region, bring a positive attitude to training and be good role models within the community, commit to attending weekly training rides and supporting peers, bring a well-functioning and maintained bike to each ride, and document personal training program after each ride.
