Kids’ Guide to Summer in Fernie

Kids sure have it good in Fernie, especially during the summer months! With an increase in visitors and a growing number of families calling Fernie home, businesses and organisations have responded with a plethora of opportunities for the younger population. This is also very helpful for parents - whether working while the kids are off school, or keen to enjoy some solo time, with so many seminars, camps and lessons to choose from catering to all ages and interests, you can be rest assured that while you’re out enjoying yourself, your kids are, too! Just make sure to book ahead of time, many of these are in high demand and fill up quickly!

Arts

The Arts Stations - Club Cre8
Every Monday this summer, your kids have the opportunity to get creative with Heather and Rachel! Half or full day options are available for kids K to Grade 6. The Arts Station – Theatre Workshop
Join Sadie and Rachel at the Fernie Arts Station for this workshop aimed at kids ages 6-12 intrigued with drama. The workshop includes singing, acting, poetry and movement with a performance to follow. Running July 2-4 and August 13-15. Theartsstation.com

Fernie Heritage Library - Reading Club

Every year, the Fernie Heritage Library hosts a reading club. This year’s theme is “Imagine the Possibilities” with seven weekly sub-themes: Step into the Pages, Inventions and Innovations, Monsters and Make-Believe, Imagination Creation, Imagine a World Where..., Reach for the Stars, and Everyday Extraordinary.  The club runs July and August Tuesday to Friday from 1:00-3:00pm. Gymnastics
Elk Valley Gymnastics, located at 902 6th Ave, hosts weekly sumner camps available for ages 5-10 (9am-1pm) and ages 7-11 (9am to 3pm). Games, outdoor activities, parkour, trampoline and more! Visit elkvalleygymnastics.ca for more details or to register.

Biking

College of the Rockies – Mini Rippers
A one-day program for 5-8 year olds who know how to ride a bike. Designed to teach children the basic skills of mountain biking including bike handling, braking, descending and cornering. Fridays starting June 28 through August 24, 9:30am - 12:30pm. Call 250-423-4691 to register.

College of the Rockies – General Mountain Bike Camp
A three-day program for beginner/intermediate level teaching kids aged 8-14 the basic skills of mountain biking, not how to ride a bike. Covering bike handling, braking, descending, climbing, rolling over obstacles and cornering. Tuesday to Thursdays each week, starting June 25 and ending August 22, 9:30am - 2:30pm. College of the Rockies – Advanced Mountain Bike Camp
This course is the next progression from the general bike camp and kids must have been signed off by the instructor in order to take this course, ages 10-15. It covers skills including advanced bike handling, selective braking, climbing over obstacles, high speed cornering, wheel lifts and intro to drops and jumps. Fernie Alpine Resort – Kids Freeride Camps
Teaching kids ages 8-16 to ride hard and safe. Learn to ride steep lines and tackle challenging terrain with a team of professional coaches. Choose one or two days, camps run July 11-12 and 27-28, August 8-9 and 17-18, from 10am to 4pm. Skifernie.com

Fernie Golf Club – Beginner Golf Camp
A two-day camp aimed at kids who are new to golf or want a fun couple of days at the golf course. Ages 7-14, July 15-16. Golffernie.com

Outdoor and Adventure

Elk River Watershed Discovery Camps
A fun and engaging hands-on field camp for youth age 10-14. Explore the Elk Valley Watershed through hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, rafting and more. Subsidies available, sessions run July 8-12, 22-26 and August 12-14 with registration through the College of the Rockies. 250-423-4691.

Fernie Alpine Resort - Kids Howl at the Moon Campout
Located at the Bear’s Den, for ages 8 and over, this overnight adventure provides a single lift ticket, dinner and smores/snacks, breakfast and fantastic campout programming. Fully supervised, running July 27, August 10 and August 24. skifernie.com

Fernie Alpine Resort – Mini Griz Rangers
Professional kids camp staff keep children active and engaged through games and activities such as scavenger hunts and digging for treasures. For ages 3-5, half day and full day camps are available starting June 22 to September 2. skifernie.com

Fernie School Aged Care - Summer Camp

A licensed program with professional and qualified staff, FCAC runs week-long sessions for eight weeks of the summer, from 8:30am to 5:30pm, with weekly themes full of crafts, games, nature play and field trips. Kindergarten - Grade 6, Fernieschoolagedcare.com 

Fernie School Aged Care - Sunny Days Pre-School Camp
In its third year, this camp is for ages 3-5 and runs half days, 9am to noon every Monday and Wednesday from July 22 to August 21. Spent mainly outdoors, kids can learn the fundamental skills of outdoor activities while embracing Fernie’s natural play spaces. Fernieschoolagedcare.com

Soccer

Soccer Quest is BC Interior’s largest full time Soccer Company and is hosting its annual summer camps for ages 4-18 July 1-5. The Mini Program, Half Day and Full Day Camps are available, the weekend includes a free T-shirt, soccer ball, pizza Friday, professional coaching, camp photo, and a chance to win Whitecaps FC tickets. Swimming

The Fernie Aquatic Centre offers many opportunities for kids throughout the summer! Swim lessons are a popular summer time activity! Make sure to book way head of schedule, as these fill up quickly for all levels. Weekends, enjoy the waterside from 1-5pm. They also host inflatable toys swims on Saturdays from 2-4pm. Please note the Aquatic Centre indoor facilities close August 10 for annual maintenance. Outside of the Aquatic Centre, you’ll find the free Splash Park - complete with a new shade structure. Tennis

Weekly Lessons
Fernie’s Tennis Coaching hosts weekly group lessons for children ages 2-5 this Summer, running every Friday from 10am to 12pm. There are also spring and fall weekly lessons available for this age group, as well as for those over 6! Held at the James White tennis courts, tennisfernie.com

Summer Camps

Watersports Tennis

H2O School Ltd. is hosting multiple kids camps this summer! From one day to five days, H2O teaches kids how to be safe and responsible boaters alongside wake surf and/or fly board lessons and additional activities. All gear, tools and equipment is provided.
