6th Annual Elk Valley Streak
Start 2024 off on the right foot, tire, ski or snowshoe by joining the Elk Valley Streak! The goal is to get active outside for as many days in the month of January for a minimum of 30 minutes. Remember, while we all likely endeavour to participate all 31 days, life happens! If you miss a day or can only squeeze in 10 minutes, that’s okay. Get as many days in as works for you and be proud of your efforts.
This year, all funds raised benefit the Elk Valley Suicide Task Force, which promotes awareness, prevention and support for those impacted by suicide in the Elk Valley. Annually, they organize the Summer Solstice Ride for Mental Health, bringing the community together to ride from dawn until dusk, or to choose their own adventure in the name of mental health and suicide awareness. They also organize a local event for World Suicide Prevention Day, have offered grief support groups, and created the Conversation Starter project at local cafés, among others. Their website, evstf.ca offers an abundance of resources, as do their social media pages @ElkValleySuicideTaskForce.
There is a lot going on this January to get you outside and motivated to Streak. Each community has events taking place, from trail running to snowshoeing to fat biking to walking to Nordic or downhill skiing, there are many options to choose from. There are also ways to be creative, for example an afternoon skate at the outdoor rink in Fernie or along Sparwood’s skate path. Tobogganing on one of the many hills found in our communities. Shoveling your neighbour’s driveway. Building a snow fort! We hope you get out there and have fun this January, and remember to share your photos, experiences and of course funny stories with the Elk Valley Streak group on Facebook. Happy Streaking!
