Home Sweet Home

Times have certainly changed in Fernie. Ten years ago, if you wanted to upgrade your couch, it involved a trip to the City. The choice in town was minimal, and the chances of you finding 'The One' was pretty much non-existent. These days, we're lucky. All you have to do is take a walk downtown and stop by Urban Settler, or the new, Elk Valley Furniture Studio, to put together the living room (or the bedroom, or the dining room) of your dreams.
Elk Valley Furniture Studio's motto is, 'Shop Selection, Shop Local, Shop Price,' and upon laying my eyes on their new showroom, I knew that my dream of finding the perfect living room was off to a good start. I was instantly fixated on the most divine navy velvet swivel chair (that's aaalllll of the right words right there) by Dynasty Furniture (a Calgary company). To my delight, it comes in a bigger version, and you can choose any fabric. While I am a HUGE fan of the velvet, I would love it bigger, so I'm putting my order in and have already planned the perfect spot for it by the window (insert dreams of cozying up, with a cup of tea, reading a book).
Did you know that we now have a huge selection of area rugs in Fernie?! And, the best part, they have a 5' x 7' rug starting at $268! I can't believe how well priced they are. Elk Valley Furniture Studio currently has 18 rugs hanging from their walls for the perfect viewing opportunity, and they can also provide you with a catalogue with hundreds more so you can find the one that goes *just* right.
How long since you have bought a new mattress? I don't even want to answer that question… let's just say that it's probably time for an upgrade. With a selection to meet all budgets and comfort levels (yes, some even massage – MASSAGE!), you are sure to find the solution to a good night's sleep. The beloved Tempur-pedic mattress has material that responds to your body's temperature, weight and shape for truly personalized comfort and support. That's a smart choice considering we spend an average of 227,760 hours in bed over our lifetime (yes, I Googled it).
Couches, dining tables, coffee tables, beds, mattresses, bedroom settings – be prepared to be impressed by not only the quality of the (mostly Canadian) furniture but also the price. You have to stop by for a chat. If they don't have what you want, they will happily source it. Now that's service!
With an excellent reputation for quality, The Urban Settler has long been the place to shop to achieve the rustic modern style in your home. When you walk in the doors of the beautiful old Livery building (which is where The Urban Settler calls home), its curated collection of furnishings and décor is like a true calling to the mountains.
You will find all of the decor you need to fill your home, but I want to chat about the furniture. When buying the more significant pieces for your home, there is no doubt that if you spend a little more, it will last you a lot longer. They say that a high-quality sofa should last around 25 years while one of average quality should last about 10. There are certainly many places that you can save within your home, but I suggest you splurge on your sofa. Lucky for you (and all of us in Fernie), the Harry sectional by Van Gogh is a GORGEOUS sofa that has a look that won't date, can be customized to your choice in fabric and size and is so comfy that you will be excited to fall asleep on it while watching a movie. They have a model on the floor, so go and have a lounge, it's worth it!
On my list of 'wants' is a new eight-seater dining table. I love a full table with family and friends breaking bread, and the Industrial Steel Base Table has gone straight to the top of the list. It draws inspiration from the vintage industrial factory worktables. It is fully customizable, so you get to pick your wood (and stain), width and length so fitting my crazy (as in, the good crazy) tribe around it will be no problem. Bring on the dinner parties!
The Urban Settler also offers Fernie's most extensive range of window coverings. We are fortunate to have a company in town that goes above and beyond to make sure you have the right blind for your needs, room-to-room. From blinds, roller shades, shutters, and designer shades, their professional team will walk you through the entire process (including installation). I'm going with a blackout blind. Match that with my massaging mattress, and I will never leave my bed.
The Urban Settler has long since established an excellent name when it comes to customization. You name it; they customize it - Sofa's, dining tables, wood feature walls, cushions, (even towels and sheets). Come in with your dreams and see if they can help you make it happen.
