Canada's Largest Mobile EV Charger Launches in the East Kootenays

Teck Resources Limited (Teck), Portable Electric, and the Community Energy Association are pleased to announce the launch of Canada’s largest clean energy, mobile electric vehicle (EV) charger in the East Kootenays this summer.

Fully funded by Teck, the innovative mobile EV charger builds on previous, collaborative efforts to support EV adoption in the region including Accelerate Kootenays, an award-winning initiative responsible for the installation of 40 Level 2 and 13 DC Fast Chargers across the region. The mobile charger will provide an opportunity to deepen engagement with the public on the future of low-carbon transportation—including the applicability of battery and electric vehicle technology in cold weather and in rural communities.

In addition to powering EVs, the charger acts as an e-generator to power e-bikes, audio equipment, food trucks and more, and is an emissions-free power source. It will be available in multiple locations throughout the East Kootenays this summer including farmers markets, community events and local concerts. Following the initial deployment, the charger will operate in the broader region year-round. More information on the charger, including scheduling, will be available at communityenergy.ca.

“We are proud to partner with the Community Energy Association and Portable Electric to bring Canada’s largest mobile EV charger to the East Kootenays this summer. Teck is committed to supporting the global transition to a low-carbon future, including setting a goal to be carbon neutral across our operations by 2050," said Jeff Hanman, Vice President of Sustainable Development at Teck.

While Megan Lohmann, Director of Strategic Initiatives with the Community Energy Association had this to say:

“This project exemplifies the type of innovative leadership that is necessary to support our transition to a low carbon future. Leveraging the strengths of each of the partners, the mobile charger provides communities across the region with an opportunity to interact with emerging technology in a very tangible way. We are thrilled to support the Kootenays to continue to play a lead role in rural electric mobility initiatives."

Interesting Facts:

  • The mobile charger is the largest battery-electric mobile charger in Canada, in terms of battery capacity, with two Level 2, 7-kilowatt chargers capable of providing 75 km of range per hour (RPH) of charging to EVs.
  • It is able to charge multiple EVs simultaneously and be recharged in a number of innovative ways, including through an EV station or solar generation.
  • The mobile power system is completely silent, emissions-free, and can be used in sensitive nature areas and confined spaces. It comes mounted on a towable trailer; however, it can also be placed in a pickup truck or on a flatbed truck.
  • In addition to charging EVs, the mobile charger can power live events, farmer’s markets and film sets, and can be used for back-up power and to support power for wildfire response crews.
