Emily Brydon Youth Foundation Golf Tournament 2011

This year’s Emily Brydon Youth Foundation (EBYF) Golf Tournament held on September 17 was another success. The main fundraising activity for the foundation, EBYF’s board of directors depend on this event to operate annually, funding the many youth of the Elk Valley in need of financial support in pursuit of their dreams. The tournament also is integral to promoting EBYF and its services to the community and beyond. This year participants left feeling proud of this amazing community organization and looking forward to next year's tournament already.

The EBYF Golf Tournament raised over $28,000 thanks to the many sponsors and participants and had a record breaking number for dinner. Emily and the board were left in awe of the donations from the community, enjoyed the involvement sponsors put into each holes, had great cooperation with the Fernie Golf and Country Club and CP Catering, were impressed with the fun crowd keeping the EBYF spirit alive, and feel incredibly blessed by the support.

They would like to thank this year's players, sponsors and those that donated prizes. Don't miss out on next year's event, make sure to keep up to date by following the organization on Facebook and on twitter or by visiting their website.

Fernie Trails Alliance
To enhance the hiking and mountain biking experience on our local trails, the Fernie Trails Alliance (FTA) has taken on a massive signage project. With help from Morris Manufacturing, River City Woodworking, and countless volunteer hours we have over 150 signs being mounted on cedar posts ready for installation. To make this project a success, the FTA is asking for help from the community. To register as a volunteer and receive e-mails regarding work parties, or to make a tax deductible donation visit the Fernie Trails Alliance website.

Fernie Women’s Centre, 1592 10th Ave
Fernie Women’s Centre has moved to a new location just off the highway behind the East Kootenay Community Credit Union. This property has a house and a garage with the Women’s Centre operating out of the house, and offering the same services. “We are still a resource and drop in centre, offering free counselling for women and running our wonderful parenting programs. Please come by and visit us in our new space,” says Lauren Fox, Fernie Women’s Centre.

The garage is being renovated to become the program space. There will be a kitchen, a lot of open space with comfortable seating, a play area for kids, and a computer station. Please note that groups are not moving locations until further notice. If you attend a Women’s Centre Program the facilitator will let you know when the move will take place. There are wonderful partnerships being formed to help with the renovations. “We are working with the local branch of Canadian Home Builders Association and hope to be working with Columbia Basin Trust to help. The renovation is a real community project!” says Lauren.

Grow Children’s and Maternity, 562B 2nd Ave 250-423-GROW
Local business owner Melissa MacKay has recently been certified as a Child Passenger Safety Educator (CPSE) with the Justice Institute of BC and in conjunction with ICBC. While selling car seats, she was constantly being asked questions about installing the seats but was stuck on what information she could give because of liability issues. With no one in the Elk Valley being certified she decided to invite the course to Fernie where eight people from Kimberly to Sparwood attended and got their certification.

Now that she is certified she is able to answer all of your questions. Being certified as an educator means that she can teach parents how to install and use seats correctly instead of just doing it for them. Melissa is offering these services free of charge and is happy to help everyone safely protect children in vehicles. If you have any questions, call or drop by the store. You can also join Grow’s Facebook page at facebook.com/growbabygrow where she will be sharing tips and links on child passenger safety. She would like to thank Teck for sponsoring the course.
