Boardstiff 542 2nd Ave, 250-423-3473
"Two years ago I wanted something new. I wanted to learn a new skill, now I'd like to bring that skill to the Kootenays," says Chris Finlin, who two years ago moved from Southern Ontario to Vancouver Island to work as an apprentice at Barracuda Surfboards in Victoria. Learning under the tutelage of board shaper/designer Carl White, Finlin fell in love with the hand crafted boards. Now the new manager of Boardstiff Kimberley, and with a New Zealander from Northwest Surf Designs collaborating, Finlin wants to bring their skills to the landlocked Kootenays by making custom wake surfboards and paddle boards to get people into the water. He also wants to incorporate local artists’ work into the board designs. "They are community sports. I want to get the community here involved in the process." In addition to making new boards Finlin takes pride in repairing damaged boards. Finlin laughs, "People have relationships with their boards. Sometimes there are bumps in the road. I look at myself as the person who can mend the relationship!"
