May 2013 Business News Part 2
Fernie Youth Soccer
Fernie Youth Soccer is enjoying a very exciting period. Over 400 soccer players from age four to 18 have signed up for the new season! While that is amazing in itself, there is more fantastic news: a development coach from Challenger soccer camps has been hired to support and mentor the volunteer coaches and players. This is one reason that the regular season schedule may have to be tweaked, so the coach can have access to all teams. Another great reason is that the Max Turyk soccer field upgrade begins this June. One field will be transformed to 16,000m2 of flexible playing area that can sport a variety of field layouts. With improved drainage, the fields will become an unbelievable resource starting in 2014. It will be worth the squeeze.

Rocky Mountain Wakesurfing Association
The Rocky Mountain Wakesurfing Association was created by volunteers from the Elk Valley who are passionate about increasing the level of local participation in the sport of wakesurfing. In order to enable local riders to meet and compete with pro competitors from around the world, the RMWA created the Koocanusa Wakesurfing Challenge, which was the first event of its kind in the country and Canada’s National Qualifier for the World Series of Wakesurfing 2012.
Last year, the KWC welcomed competitors from eight states and four provinces. Three local surfers had podium finishes, giving them the opportunity to compete at the Worlds in Parker, Arizona, where they also placed well. This summer, 17-year-old world champion Keenan Flegel from Florida will be offering clinics to riders on August 7-8. The 2013 KWC takes place August 9-11 at Lake Koocanusa. Nonstop Ski and Snowboard held its annual charity fashion show and auction as a lead up to Fernie’s Hot Dog Day festivities this April, where staff and instructors walked the runway in retro wear at the Red Tree Lodge while audience members bid to rent outfits for the upcoming Hot Dog Day activities. Proceeds went to a charity of their choice, with this year’s being ShelterBox International.
ShelterBox is an international disaster relief agency with a mandate to provide emergency shelter and tools to those who have been displaced from their homes following natural or manmade disaster throughout the world. ShelterBox Ambassador and response Team member, Andre Bloemink, would like to extend his gratitude towards Nonstop for raising and donating a total of $5200, which went towards five complete boxes being delivered and providing shelter, warmth and dignity to those in need the next time disaster strikes.
