College of the Rockies Fernie Campus
342-3rd Ave

A three-week training program is being offered by The College of the Rockies, Fernie Campus, in partnership with Teck. The goal of the program is to introduce women to careers available within the surface coal mining industry.

Upon completion of the course, participants will gain skills to improve their employability within the industry/workforce. This is the first time a course of this nature has been offered through The College of the Rockies. The haul truck training in this course is a reduced version (one week) of what is available in the full Haul Truck Operator program (four weeks). The goal is to have sufficient interest so the program can be completed by March 31, 2014. Dependent on interest, this program may be offered a second time in 2014.

Cost of the course is $995. For information on potential funding options and/or to register, contact the Fernie Campus directly or the Program Coordinator, Valerie Luznar-Purdy at 250-423-3827.

Beginning February 1, after taking inspiration from an article recently read on the internet, Mugshots Café in Fernie will be operating a suspended coffee/meal program. This program will be aimed to help the people in our community who, on a daily basis, suffer from hardships that many of us do not. This anonymous act of charity would greatly benefit those less fortunate. This program all begins with you.

Here’s how it works:
Whilst ordering your meal, ask the server to charge you for a suspended coffee ($1.75) or the option of either a suspended $5 breakfast or a $5 lunch. The server will take payment and your order will go onto a sheet, where it will remain until someone comes to use it.

Please stop by Mugshots to be a part of this great endeavor.
