The Fernie Historical Society is celebrating five years of planning, consulting, fundraising and untold hours of physical labour coming to fruition with the grand opening of the Fernie Museum. To honour the community’s hard work and dedication to the creation of a museum a special day-long celebration will take place Saturday, September 28.

“We are incredibly happy about the completion of the Fernie Museum Project. We are proud of what we have achieved over the past five years. We want to celebrate with the community who helped make this happen,” says past Museum President Laura Nelson.

The day’s activities include a Heritage Tea with three sittings at 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 2:30pm, featuring local musicians, local fare and colorful characters from Fernie’s past. Limited $15 tickets will be available at the end of August at the Fernie Museum. The Community Celebration follows at 4:30pm and will include a slide show and cake. They invite all to enjoy them in celebrating this momentous occasion.

Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club
The Fernie Trails and Ski Touring Club is hosting Porky Blue, back by popular demand. This fundraising event for the Fernie trail system will take “strong, adult mountain bikers” on a 26km mountain ride including a shuttle from the Fernie Hotel to the start. Beginning from the Coal Creek Summit, and taking the popular Porky Blue trail to Ridgemont Road and Coal Discover trail back to town, the ride should take on average four hours. Following the ride, participants will enjoy dinner and refreshments at the Fernie Hotel.

Those interested can register at the Guide’s Hut or online at Free shuttle to the first 100 registrants, all participants receive a numbered race plate, T-shirt, dinner and beer garden ticket.

Summer Socials – Yoga Festival and Yoga World Record Attempt
Each Sunday afternoon and Wednesday evening downtown Fernie comes alive with the Summer Socials during the months of July and August. As part of the Fernie Feel Good Day taking place Sunday August 25, organizers are hosting a world record yoga event, attempting to smash the world record for the longest yoga chain ever.

The Guinness World Record (GWR) takes place at 3pm and those interested can sign up at or email Additional yoga events will be taking place all weekend in celebration.
