Sounds of Fernie
Have you heard the sound of music flowing through the Elk Valley? There’s nothing quite like experiencing live performance and we are lucky to have multiple venues in town supporting artists!
We start them early at the Arts Station with Tot’s Music last fall and *new* monthly dance parties this winter, featuring interactive activities and games for toddlers that focus on the basic elements of music. To support local kids interested in singing and our next pop stars, we offer Voice Lessons with Rachel Behan of local group Hark Raving Siren. In addition we offer guitar lessons with local artist Sami Valvaara and piano lessons with James Kingdon and Sadie Rosgen for all ages. Did you know the Arts Station is home to an upright piano and Yamaha digital piano which are free for community use? There is also a community grand piano which caretakers 88 Keys Society preserves and puts on classical concerts at the Mountainside Community Church. We are also grateful to be home to the Fernie Community Choir, which meets at the Arts Station on Tuesday nights to practice beautiful choral arrangements.
The Arts Station’s mandate is to provide opportunities in the arts, so we are very excited to be launching our Spotlight Series showcasing local performers the first Thursday of each month!
Grab your tickets for January 4 to get a feel for the local music scene featuring Lord Knows, Benjamin Charles, Niall McKenna with Megan Davis, Barabara Bassett and Sadie Rosgen!
Outdoor venue Station Square hosts the Wednesday Socials showcasing touring artists in different genres and we are already working on next summer’s lineup so stay tuned. In the meantime, Griz Days will offer that big festival feel this winter!
We are not the only venue in town offering live music. Freshies and The Fernie Taphouse host jam nights on Saturday evenings. On Wednesday nights, Bramasole offers happy hour all night featuring live music. Want to stretch your singing muscles and enjoy nightlife with friends? Check out Karaoke Night at the Kodiak Lounge every Thursday evening. The Knox on 2nd will introduce a new winter concert series starting in January as well as offering the basement for practice to some local bands. The Northern Bar & Stage also hosts various concerts year-round. Who’s to say which local act will blow up next? With your support, there’s no limit to the heights they can reach!
Remember to participate in #Fernieartstreak this January by dedicating time each day to art. It is not just for visual arts and can be as simple as streaming your favourite local musician!
