If You Build It, They Will Come

Instead of fighting with your New Year’s resolutions this year why not build something instead? The Raging Elk Cardboard Derby on Saturday 22 at Fernie Alpine Resort is a great opportunity to get together with your partner, friends or kids and enjoy creating your very own masterpiece and a whole host of memories that will last well beyond that ubiquitous list.

The competition gives you the chance to blow away the cobwebs of last year, shake off the aftermath of the holiday season and get your brain back into gear by tackling a tricky engineering puzzle- create a craft entirely from cardboard paper, glue, tape, paint and string which is capable of carrying up to four people down a ski slope. Yes, that’s right, no skis, no runners, no metal or wood. Your craft must have braking ability and while steering is optional, it is highly recommended! Helmets are mandatory and at least one driver must be over 19, kids are welcome as co-pilots. A safety inspection will be held prior to the race start.

This is an event for creativity, not only in the construction but also in the style and finish of your craft. Past entries have included a bagel, the Flintstones car, a banana, a pirate ship, a hot tub and the mystery machine complete with the whole Scooby Doo gang. Last year’s entry of a three wheeled motorcycle blew the judges away with its attention to detail and construction. Prizes will be awarded in various categories at a ceremony in the Day Lodge after the event so get your thinking caps on!

The purpose of the event is to get your vessel as close as possible to the target so build with accuracy in mind- there’s no points for speed. Even if you don’t want to build anything, the Cardboard Derby is a great spectator event and as it’s held within walking distance of the base area, you don’t even need a lift pass to get there. Racing starts at 1pm - join the crowds in cheering on your favourite creation! For more information visit www.skifernie.com or visit the Raging Elk Cardboard Derby facebook page.

If indoor entertainment is more your style, make sure to pick up tickets for the Snowed In Comedy Tour on Sunday 30. Last year’s event was a sell out success at the Park Place Lodge so if you like to laugh until you cry make sure you don’t miss out! The brainchild of Dan Quinn as a way to snowboard his way around the Rockies while paying for his accommodation by doing stand-up in the evenings, this is a unique chance to see not one but four award winning comedians who would otherwise be found on much larger stages. Dan heads the line-up with his sharp wit and is joined by the hilariously irreverent observational humour of Craig Campbell. Scottish born musical comedian Phil Nichol is sure to offer some surprises while Australian-Greek born Peter Kalamis will entertain and confuse with his amazing repertoire of accents and characters.
