The Glamour and the Grind
Just about every weekend in June offers a great outdoor event, from the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life on Saturday June 4 to the Annual Lizard Range Disc Golf Tournament on Friday July 1. Athletes can get their run on in Elkford on Sunday June 5 or in Wasa Lake on June 11-12 while bikers will be happy to see the return of the Fernie Mountain Bike Club’s Two-Knee Tuesdays. Fernie Golf and Country Club kick things into gear with the Men’s Pro-Am and Couples Alternate Shot in the second week of the month and Fernie Alpine Resort opens for summer biking on Saturday 25.
Last June I took over writing the events feature for the Fernie Fix. The Disc Golf Tournament was the perfect fit for my very first column at the start of the glorious Fernie summer - this year the event will be held on the Canada Day weekend in July at the beautiful shady course in James White Park. If a fun day in the sun, BBQ and the chance to win great prizes sounds like your thing, make sure you check out the details and register in advance at www.ferniediscgolf.com. To mark my one year anniversary column I wanted to turn to something completely different, and it just happens that I have the inside scoop on a fabulous evening event in June - The Arts & Letters ‘Gatsby Gala.’ It doesn’t get much more different than this!
The Gatsby Gala on Saturday June 18 will take the form of an elegant movable feast with an emphasis on the Art Deco style that made the 1920’s so famous. Known as the ‘Jazz Age’, the 20’s were a period of refined opulence juxtaposed with the gangster elements of prohibition. Guests attending the Gala are encouraged to dress in their finery in keeping with the period - think flowing chiffon, dropped waists, cloche hats, Cuban heels and fans for the ladies; linen or wool suits, spats, panama hats and Clark Gable-style moustaches for the gentlemen. Come prepared for a glorious evening spread across three locations, including period-inspired cocktails, champagne, dancing, fine food and wine, endless entertainment and a live and silent auction packed with magical packages and fabulous artwork.
The Gala is the latest in a series of bi-annual events hosted by the Friends of the Fernie Heritage Library and The Arts Station. Created to raise funds for the enrichment of our community and children’s programming, past events have provided subsidies to improve access to Arts Station programming and allowed for the creation of a successful children’s theatre group. The Fernie Heritage Library expanded senior programming and offered a weekly reading and film group at Rocky Mountain Village. Additional funds allowed the library to offer expanded outreach programming to local schools.
The glamorous evening begins at 6pm with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the elegantly styled terrace at The Arts Station. As the sun goes down, guests will promenade to the Heritage Library where greeters will offer a classic coupe glass of champagne and then invite you to peruse the live auction packages or place a bid on a silent auction item. At 8pm a sumptuous dinner will be served followed by the entertaining live auction. A limited number of very special packages have been crafted this year including old favourites such as the Private Dinner Party and Cowboy Rendezvous while new additions such as the Fine Wine Selection from Fernie’s oenophiles is sure to be a major hit for the evening. Following the auction, the gathering will once again move on- this time to Picnic for cocktails, dessert and dancing until the small hours.
Tickets for this special event are very limited and are now on sale at The Arts Station and the Heritage Library for $100 per person and include everything mentioned. If you are unable to attend, you can also support the event by purchasing a limited edition raffle ticket for a weekend away to stay at the Mirabeau Park Hotel in Spokane and see Michael Jackson’s The Immortal Tour by Cirque du Soleil on November 12.
