Fernie Arts Co-op Grand Re-Opening
On Saturday, December 7, the Fernie Arts Co-op is combining their Annual "We Pay The Tax" Sale with a Grand Re-Opening. They will be open for late night shopping from 10am - 8pm for the event where the price you see is the price you pay. (They cover the tax!)
The Fernie Arts Co-op has been in business for almost 20 years and a BC Co-operative since 2006. With over 40 local artists from Crowsnest Pass to Jaffray, this organization provides its members with a retail outlet to sell their creations. Located downtown in the historical Minifies building, their gallery is a popular tourist destination for those seeking unique Fernie mementos such as original paintings, photography, woodworking, stained glass, jewelry, pottery, handmade soap and more!
Each year, The Fernie Arts Co-op chooses a local charity to give a portion of their income. This year they are donating 1% of their total December sales to Fernie Friends for Friends, a local organization which helps individuals and family through their cancer treatments.
The Fernei Arts Co-op packages creations with environmentally friendly products such as their hand stamped brown paper bags. For breakable items, they re-purpose bubble wrap and foam packaging regularly given to them by other Fernie retailers. They also offer free Fernie Arts Co-op cloth shopping bags with purchases over $100 and free gift wrapping throughout the holidays.
As a co-operative, they have formed a creative community by sharing inspiration and supporting one another. The Arts Co-op allows artists to pool resources and various talents to elevate as a group. This summer, they installed new slat board for ease of display and new track lighting to brighten up the store. You won’t believe the difference! Many members have also combined efforts to create new branding, signage and a new website for the business.
To celebrate these accomplishments, they decided to hold a Grand Re-Opening combined with their annual “We Pay The Tax” sale.
"We invite you and your friends to join us on Saturday, December 7tto come check out our new look, share a few nibbles, cake and hot apple cider. Many of our artists will be in attendance throughout the day so that you can meet them in person and chat about their artistic inspirations and process. Ken Vickets will be present demoing his one of a kind cigar box guitars for a little live music. He invites you to try one and give us your best bluesy riff if you dare," says Melanie MacVoy, artist and member.
Artists have also donated some of their fantastic local creations to be given away as door prizes. They will be drawing names every hour throughout the day, so you won’t want to miss out!
