Expand, Engage and Escape
The new year offers a chance to reflect, to realign priorities and put mindful thought into the future. It’s a great time to skim read the past year, bind together its highlights and find lessons in the unplanned and unexpected. It’s a time to begin anew, fresh and ready to tackle anything.
There’s always potential for the new year to be the best-seller in the story of your life. But finding inspiration may be fleeting and fickle. Having access to the resources a library provides is a freedom for both the mind and soul.
Books provide a magic portal, through which you can travel anywhere, at any time, with whoever you want to travel with. A library card can buy you a one-way ticket to this adventure, escape, or education. Name what you’re interested in and there’s likely going to be a book about it.
People have used books as an escape for centuries. It’s called ‘transportation,’ a fancy word for ‘getting lost in a book.’ It’s scientifically proven that reading can improve creativity and empathy, and reduce stress and boredom.
Don’t be fooled though, a library is so much more than a building full of books and staff who love reading. A quality collection is a large part of our offering, but libraries have so much inspiration, information and engagement that isn’t found on a shelf.
Fernie Heritage Library prides itself on being a welcoming space for discovery, inspiration and recreation. Librarians are navigated by a few guiding principles: accessibility, freedom of information, innovation, privacy, and professionalism.
Our mission is to enrich lives and community, preserve history and provide a service to the people. We are here to help you.
A Fernie library card gains you access to books, DVDs, audiobooks, newspapers, magazines, auto and small engine repair databases and special collections including: French, large print, law, grief and greenhouse gas texts. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, we can help organize an inter-library loan. Don’t have time to get to town? Download e-books and e-audiobooks through the Libby app or stream films through IndieFlix.
We host an array of community programs to participate in including adult book clubs, toddlertime and storytime (held virtually). We also offer weekly Curbside Craft Kits (available for pick-up Wednesday afternoons), monthly Cozy Kits and Try-It at Home Tutorials, all posted to Facebook and Instagram. Families in town may also be aware of our Books for Babies program, where new parents are given a free
book and DVD to kickstart their child’s educational growth.
Some of our services include free internet and computer usage, printing, scanning and faxing for a nominal fee. During the summer the garden is a popular place to relax and read, or borrow a laptop and work in the sun.
So, we invite you to explore our collection, services, and programming. Engage in the new year with relish and fervor. Expand your horizons with a library card and the access it grants you!
