Painting Outdoors

Painting or drawing in the great outdoors is often called plein air, but I don’t often call it that myself. A fancy label doesn’t feel like me, and since I know and respect some local plein air painters, I can’t seem to put myself in the same category. For me, I just love painting outside with a few of my favourite art tools in this beautiful town.

The pros of painting outdoors:
•    You can paint anywhere. See below for my favourite locations to paint.
•    It’s not just about painting the landscape you see in front of you; it’s about taking in the landscape with all of your senses.
•    You’re getting away from all of your home distractions.
•    It’s free, other than your materials.
•    You can go any time of day or night.

The cons of painting outdoors:
•    It’s weather dependent. On sunny days, I try to find a place that offers shade. On windy days, you might want to bring large clips to keep your pages in place. Rainy days are best under a covered area.
•    People will stop and chat, which
might not be a con for everyone. If it
is a concern, I suggest using earbuds or headphones to show that you want to stay focused.
•    You can’t bring everything. I try to bring a small selection of my favourite art tools. When I’m home, I can add more layers or attempt a larger landscape painting based on the initial artwork.

If you’ve been thinking about painting around town this summer, here are some tips and tricks, and some of my favourite local places to paint:
•    My backyard — it’s quick, easy, and private.
•    Annex Park — there are so many great spots, such as the rock amphitheatre, the views from the southernmost part of the pond, and from the smaller old bridge.
•    Dogwood Park — the view is gorgeous in both directions, and there are benches and tables to sit at. Let’s be honest, though - anywhere along the Elk River would be inspiring.
•    Under the pedestrian bridge that leads to Gorby Trail and Sherwoody Loop.
•    Downtown Fernie — I haven’t done this yet, but I’m working up to it. I would love to try more urban spaces instead of plopping myself by all of the gorgeous rivers or ponds in town. Perhaps 2026 is my year to give it a go.

Are you inspired to get out there and paint? I have a couple more ideas for you if you’re even slightly intrigued. Bring a small, portable chair so you can go anywhere comfortably. Put your art supplies in a clear plastic bag so you can quickly find that pencil colour.

A watercolour paint set is the easiest to use since you only need a bit of water and a rag. If you’re feeling self-conscious about painting in public, bring a friend.

I know someone — ahem — who would join you.
