Going Out in Style

Emily Brydon finished off her impressive career in Nakiska at Nationals this March, winning her tenth National Championship, skiing the Dual Slalom in "style", and celebrating alongside her teammates with BC/DC at COP and onto Ceili's Pub for the evening. To say she was exhausted is an understatement, to say she was excited about what the future holds equally so...particularly the immediate future.

There are two things that people from Fernie know for sure - powder and partying. Essentially, we love powder snow and will go to great lengths to ensure that we get the most of it. However when the snow is MIA, there are only two options - go hunting for snow or party it up; we chose to do both.

Fernie Boys at Big Mountain Battle Finals in Aspen

Luke and Ryland Nelson arrived in Aspen yesterday evening to begin their weekend getaway in Aspen, Colorado. Posh accommodation, a shopping spree, and the opportunity to compete in the final event - Battle in the Bowls, are all part of this winning package the duo received after competing in the Big Mountain Battle in Fernie, February 13.

Adorned in a wild red and white Canadian Maple Leaf hat decorated with tiny bells, and clanging her cowbell wildly, Brydon greeted her daughter Emily with a warm hug and then posed for pictures on Wednesday morning after her run in the GMC Canadian alpine skiing championships women's super-G.

Fernie Free Skiing

Fernie is just one of those special places, a place that is still waiting to live up to its full potential while fully enjoying the slow rise to stardom. It is also home to some amazing local talent, whether it be Olympic hopeful Emily Brydon or even Alex Lifeson, guitarist of the band Rush. What some people don't realize is that there is a small, but growing, group of talented local skiers and riders whom are taking the World Freeski Tour by storm.

Weather Watching

Each morning of the ski season, the Ski Patrol is engaged in ongoing avalanche risk assessments. Of the multiple daily chores, one stands out for its precision, tradition, and importance: The Standard Weather Observation. Weather is a key factor in predicting avalanches as it is a constant modifier of the snow pack. Events such as wind, sun, snow, rain, freezing temperatures, and thaws influence and create layers of snow with different characteristics. How those layers strengthen or weaken over time is dependent on past, present and future weather events. Observations are made at standard times and at the same plot each day. Weather recordings have strict standards that are set by The National Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Avalanche Association. Great care is taken to be sure that all observation guidelines are followed with precision.

Three Times a Charm

In some cultures, three is a lucky number and now it has become mine! Yes, I am embarking on the journey to my third Olympic Games. At the ripe old age of 29 I feel that I am finally ready to compete at home in the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. It will be a dream come true and an honour beyond words.

Top 5 Fernie Slackcountry Experiences

Fernie Alpine Resort has some excellent skiing, but just outside the boundary ropes lie something even better. The slackcountry. What is slackcountry? A backcountry experience with easier access. But just because it is easier doesn’t mean it doesn’t carry with it the same risks as the real backcountry. It should never be accessed without the same training and gear, and remember these areas are not controlled or patrolled.
