Favourite Shots of 2010

I managed to get up high on the steps of City Hall when the Olympic Torch was being carried through the crowd and was fortunate to have a great angle on the proceedings. I was really impressed with the large number of people that had come out to cheer on the Torch Relay - the energy in the crowd was palpable. To me this frame really embodies the community spirit of Fernie as well as that of the Olympics!

The Griz

According to legend, Fernie has not always been graced with the fine snow conditions we now enjoy on a regular basis. According to the legend, a baby boy was born mid winter in 1879 in a grizzly bear's cave high in the mountains. Sometime later the resident bear awoke ravenously hungry. A terrible battle occurred between the boy and the grizzly - one fighting for his life, the other for his dinner.

Fernie Free Skiing

Fernie is just one of those special places, a place that is still waiting to live up to its full potential while fully enjoying the slow rise to stardom. It is also home to some amazing local talent, whether it be Olympic hopeful Emily Brydon or even Alex Lifeson, guitarist of the band Rush. What some people don't realize is that there is a small, but growing, group of talented local skiers and riders whom are taking the World Freeski Tour by storm. Athletes such as Aaron Schmidt, Caleb Brown, Martha Burley, Ross Janzen, Janina Kuzma, Luke Nelson, Levi Marriott, Ben Olgilvie and Jamie Rizzuto belong to a posse of skiers and riders called The Fernie Freeride Team, which represent Fernie in Canada and around the world. The accomplishments of these athletes reads like a results list from the pro skiers and riders that we watch in our favorite ski and snowboard movies.

From DC to BC

Even though Washington, DC isn’t Canada’s capitol, it’s pretty hard not to see politics as that city’s principal export. But if you dig a little deeper, DC has another important legacy: music. And we’re talking some serious street cred, here. Duke Ellington, Marvin Gaye and Roberta Flack. Henry Rollins cut his teeth there before heading to California and Black Flag. March Remark

This spring, fashion gets a burst of fresh air and a bouquet of jazzy colours. Ladies if you don’t have a bandeau bra yet pick yourself up a couple, because this spring’s tanks and shirts are so oversize you’ll need a bandeau bra every time you leave the house. Look forward to really comfortable fashion trends like leggings and tunic style tops, long tees and tanks, roomy rolled up shorts and super cute jumpers. Accessorize yourself in circle scarves, bangles, headbands and snazzy eco water bottles. Essential spring wardrobe pieces include bright cardies, flat slim sneeks, oversive tanks, bandeaus, denim leggings, and a colourful bag.

Shred Kelly - I HATE WORK

Every band remembers their first gig. Most bands park their van in a dingy back alley, unload their instruments through the back door of a local bar, do a sound check, and nervously get through a well rehearsed set for very little money. For our first gig, we unloaded our instruments onto a chairlift and played 6,316 feet above sea level. It was at the top of Fernie Alpine Resort on the outside deck of the Lost Boys Café playing for skiers on their lunch break. There was no sound guy, a blizzard blew in halfway through our set, we played for free sandwiches, and we were stoked. I remember a friend telling me that he could hear my banjo all the way out in Cedar bowl that day. If someone told us then that less than a year later we would be playing on a giant stage at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, we probably would have laughed….or fainted.
