Fernie Arts Station Banner Project - 2012
Each year Victoria Avenue is accented with beautiful banners displaying the talent and creations of 36 local artists though the City of Fernie and District Arts Council's initiative - The Banner Project. In its ninth year, this project has not only added to the attraction of our historic downtown, it has become popular among the growing community of artists in Fernie and with the many tourists and residents that visit and live here.
The initiative is currently accepting submissions to the 2012 Banner Project, and are looking for "“Bold colours, striking imagery that stands out from a distance, variation in themes and artistic disciplines,” says Project Coordinator, Donna Miller and “It has to be eye-catching to the street-level observer.”
Mediums accepted include paintings, quilts, stained glass, sculpture, pottery and photography. Artists are asked to submit up to two images maximum, submitted as a jpeg file on a compact disc. It is important to take note of the dimensions of the photographed work as they will need to be cropped to 1 wide by 2 high ration in order to fit on the banners. Also, artists must include a 70 word bio/description as a file along with their name.
If you are looking for help in regards to a digital photograph of your work, contact Courtney Baker with The Arts Station at 423-4842 or Donna Miller, Project Coordinator at miller_g@hotmail.com and they can put you in touch with a local photographer who is available to help.
Submissions deadline is no later than 3pm on Friday, February 17, 2012. Further submission information and guidelines are available on The Arts Station website under “Get Involved”.
The initiative is also calling for sponsorship from the community, which helps this project remain sustainable. Each banner is available for sponsorship at the cost of $100. The banners are hung along Victoria Ave and 4th St. for one year, and then re-located to the highway. After two years the sponsor will receive the banner. To become a sponsor, attend The Banner Project Launch being hosted at the Arts Station April 19, 2012 at 7pm.
