“What is for dinner?” This may be one of the more frequently asked questions directed at parents, at least mine. It is the result if our culture’s deep rooted obsession with food, being passed from generation to generation.

For the summer, my life consists of learning through service. I am living at the Crowsnest Lake Bible Camp (CLBC) as part of a volunteer staff that allows this miraculous camp to run, year after year.

There were two fatalities in our family this morning. The second and third this week. My father was sitting at the kitchen table drinking coffee this morning as I stumbled in. When he told me the news, I asked what he did with the bodies? He said that he buried them... in the compost. Poor chickens.

Generally on the snowiest days of the year, I ride the single line. With powder awaiting the quickest way to get back up to the top is the best. Where does the garbage man take the trash? Where will we put our waste? It’s a question that puzzles even the most educated people. We mass produce at such an astonishing rate that we can’t keep up with the amount of resources required or the space to house the waste. The thing is that in reality there isn’t space. If the whole world consumed at North America’s rate we would need three to five planets to accommodate us, our stuff and of course, our waste.

She smiles as he watches her. He could see that she had a question so he reached over and patted her hand. The young girl finally spoke, “Poppa, I was just wondering, why are you, you? What should I remember?”

“The world is a book and all those who don’t travel only read one page”. –St. Augustine

During a recent self-examination I realized that I am not yet ready to make life-changing decisions. The reader may interject. “You’re only sixteen! The only decisions you make are whether or not to eat Lucky Charms or Frosted Flakes for breakfast!”

The date is September 2, and I am sitting in the Cranbrook airport nervously awaiting a sister I’ve never before met. Little do I know what an amazing impact she and others like her will have on my school, my community and myself.

Last Remembrance day I attended an amazing presentation by Eva Olsson on the subject of the Jewish Holocaust during the Second World War. Her stories impressed me because I guess I hadn’t realized the depth that prejudice can reach.
