I don’t mean Fernie Time where half the town thinks it’s OK to show up for a meeting anywhere from ten to an hour late. That’s lame. I mean just time.

A couple of Saturdays ago, Leeroy Stagger and the Wildflowers played The Art Station as the last stop on their national tour. I dragged out a friend who’s been housebound for several months with the promise of great music. Leeroy did not disappoint and the small crowd kept him going for a good half an hour, maybe 45 minutes after his ‘last song’.

The first really warm Saturday in a blatant attempt at putting off writing this piece, I wandered down Victoria Ave. A true amble. No purpose but walking down to the end and back. I ended up finding people sitting at tables in the sun and taking the same walk that I hadn’t seen since fall.

The events of history often revolve around a search for gold. From 400 years ago Columbus setting sail with three ships to today’s prospectors wandering the Yukon and the panhandle of Alaska, men are driven with the desire to accumulate gold. With the Olympics upon us, another quest for gold takes precedence. The Talking Heads on the flat screens will be randomly ranking each athlete’s chances and bemoaning the slightest bobble that “cost them the gold”. On the other hand, talk to any athlete about the experience of the Olympics, and the event, the actual gathering of athletes becomes the focus.

Recently on finishing their third year of publication, the Fernie Fix threw a tremendous “Three Years of the Fix” Party. Writers, photographers, advertisers and a host of others packed the Underground at the Brickhouse. Standing in a corner watching, perhaps the most interesting aspect of the party was the diversity of the crowd. Ages and professions mixed without measure.
